PMC X-TAC, green tip.  Is this stuff penetrator type ammo?  The PMC website says nothing about a steel core or penetrator.  I would be using it for target shooting, AR500 gong.  I don't want to damage the steel.  My experience with AR500 steel is that you don't want to hit with anything over 3000 fps.  If the 62 gr X-TAC is a penetrator, I'm going to stay away from it.

Xtac has both an m855 type and m193 type.  The m855 type 62 grain does in fact have a steel penetrator core

Ok, I just went through my stash.  I couldn't figure out where the 62 gr green tip came from.  The X-TAC 55 gr is what I was buying, out of the last 20 boxes i bought (55 gr FMJ) there was one box of the 62 gr LAP.  I thought I was stuck with 20 boxes of penetrator.  With the big order of Armscor 62 gr and these 19 boxes of 55 gr X-TAC, looks like I am g2g with the plinking ammo.  Thanks for the info on the LAP (light armor piercing).

My experience with AR500 steel has been "no worries" with M855 penetrator ammo. I've used Lake City, Radway and IMI...the worst damage it did was knock the paint off.
Now, if you're shooting AP..like M2 black tip...that's entirely different ball game. It's substantially slower than 3,000 fps (around 2650) but definately does a little more than knock off the paint.
My steel is half inch AR500 bought from Wideners. Honestly, your M855 won't hurt it.
