Hi, my first post here.  I bought one of the green cans of 420 rounds of XM855 ammo at Walmart yesterday.  These are packaged on 10 round stripper clips but I'm not having much luck trying to load a magazine directly from the stripper clip.  I'm new to ARs so it could be I just don't know the trick.  As I attempt this it's hard for me to see how it could possibly work given the amount of pressure it takes to actually get the rounds to slide off the clip.

The magazine I'm using came with my new Sig M400 (also purchased at Walmart).  It's aluminum and I can see a notch that seems to be in about the right place to accept the clip for loading but I'm not getting anywhere.  So my question is, "should this work?" or should I just give up on the clips and load the rounds one at a time.

You need some kind of speed loader.  The clip will not feed in the magazine with out one.

Here is one I use.

Here are some cheap ones (on the left) that come in military ammo cans that you could probably get for free from a generous member

if you use ammo on stripper clips, a speed loader is a worthy investment

Should work. I use a striplula with the clips and it only takes about 5 seconds to load 30 rounds

I assume the can came with a spoon or two, but maybe not. Those are the things lined up on the left side of the pic above. The wide end slides over the ridge on the back of the mag body; you put the stripper clip in the narrow end and push down on the bullets to slide them off the clip and into the magazine. If you push near the base of the bullets, it's a lot easier. Even more if you use the edge of a table or something.

From what you're describing it almost sounds like you're trying to do it without the spoon. It shouldn't be that hard, and you certainly don't need a striplula, although they are nice.

This.

Thought of loading mags from stripper clips made me LOL.  Thanks

"Oh", he says sheepishly.  I didn't even look through the entire can for an extra part.  I thought it was just full of more boxes with the "useless" stripper clips.  As soon as I read the replies I checked out the can under the foam packing and sure enough, there was a gadget for performing the loading.

This is not the first time I've flunked an IQ test in this way.  You should have seen me installing the tonneau cover on my pickup, lol.

Thanks straightening me out, at least for the moment.  I'll probably have some new incredibly dumb questions when I return from the range later today.  I'm going to zero in the cheap "prismatic" optic that Sig includes with the Walmart edition of this gun.  All the knobs say "up", even the one that's supposed to adjust for windage.

I use the Striplula and it's pretty awesome!  Get one, you won't regret it.

Just don't tell your wife that you are looking to get a "striplula" or you will get that look.....

Once you put the "spoon" (magazine adaptr) on the magazine, slide the clip into it until it bottoms outl. Now push straight down  on the BASE of the top case.  The rounds should just pop into the magazine.

The Striplula is a very worthwhile investment,  it will align the clips more quickly than the spoon, and its lever will save your thumbs from lots of wear and tear,

It takes a big man to admit his mistakes. Kudos to you

+1 on the Striplula
