Looking at ammo today at a local gun show, there is obviously some old crap for sale, but one dealer has Lake City SS109 green tip "current production over runs".
How do I determine the production date? it's boxed 1000rd. loose Thanks |

Look at the numbers on the headstamp. This, and if it is in original packaging and they don't want you to peek, there would be a good label on the packages. Otherwise, they should let you inspect the heastamps. One way or the other, you should be able to verify what you are buying or they are trying to sell you junk. |
| "Current production" does not necessarily mean "made fresh last week". It typically means that this is the same ammunition that is currently being produced, and it could be a year or two old - without having any lower quality. As noted above, properly made ammo can last many decades and still be great shooting ammo. You can tell is it's been stored unacceptably by the brass being corroded (green and rough), and the packaging eith being rotten or obviously newer than the ammunition. If it looks OK, including mabye being a little dark, then it is most likely at least OK. |

Quoted: Quoted: Very true.Lake City doesn't produce SS109, they produce M855 Indeed- yet many (even distributors) erroneously call anything with a green tip SS109..... "Lake City 5.56mm Ammo is the best 5.56 Military ammo manufactured. This is the original US Military Lake City Arsenal 5.56x45mm 62 Grain Lake City SS109 Ball Cartridge. Featuring a green tip with a steel penetrator and a lead core firing at 3,025 fps. This Mil-spec M855 SS109 Penetrator features a cannelure and boat-tail design and the primer and case is sealed for long term storage and moisture protection." ![]() |
| Again with the "penetrator" BS... The steel insert is MILD steel, and serves only to support the ogive while moving center of mass away from the bullet's tip. It is an SS109-type bullet, but the US has never officially adopted that nomenclature. Marketing is often a lower life form than ambulance chasing lawers. |
