I have heard that soft points are not reliable in an AR-15. Is it true the lead builds up on the ramps and causes feeding issues with fmj after awhile?

I have a buddy with whom I compete in High Power matches (reduced course). He uses 55 gr. Sierra soft point boat tails. Since we always shoot next to each other, I know for sure he hasn't had any kind of failure in over 1000+ rounds.

I shoot reloaded Hornady SP in mine.  No problems so far

According to the "Doc", misc problems start to develop with SP rounds after firing 200 - 300 continuous rounds.  I have never fired that many continuous rounds of SP without cleaning so I can't comment.

Open tip match (OTM) or hollow point boat tail (HPBT) rifle bullets are NOT the type of hollow points that are frequently mis-associated with hollow point hand gun bullets.  They are not made with the rational for expansion to limit penetration and leave all the energy in the target that hollow point hand gun bullets are designed to do.  OTM/HPBT rifle bullets have a very small hollow point resulting from how the bullets are manufactured to produce the spire point.

I have runs a few thousand hornady 60 grain soft points over 500 at one and never had any problems of any kind. It is all I shoot now when my z/v max bullets are gone. I have m4 feed ramps and pmags don't know if that keeps me from having problems.

You would have to be in one hell of a fire fight for it to happen.

I'm currently working a load up for some 55gr Hornady SPs, and have only fired 25 so far. They fed just fine in my AR with M4 feed ramps.

I think you'll be fine.

I don't doubt what the good Dr. has stated with respect to this matter, but I think his statement to the effect of 'problems can develop after firing 200-300 rounds' has been construed as 'don't fire soft point rounds in ARs as problems WILL develop.'

Personally, I've fired hundreds upon hundreds of soft points through my AR without ever cleaning the feedramp, and can't recall ever having a problem. This has been both the Hornady 55-grain SP and the Remington Core-Lokt 55-grain SP (primarily the former).
