I got hold of some ammo in a trade and it's producing split necks about every fifth round in both my AR's. (5,56)
The ammo in question is loaded by a reputable local company that's been around for a good while. It's 62 gr. HP match type bullet in new Winchester cases. It has a heavy taper crimp similar to what I put on my own reloads. Doesn't seem too overly hot or show high pressure signs, but it's not all that accurate, either. As near as I can measure, it's not over length (case or overall length). Any ideas? This is not really a reloading question because it's new commercial ammo. |
| Based on 30+ yrs of reloading, sounds like they used some brass that is on it's last leg. From my experience, split necks can be caused by too many reloadings at or near max velocity. Once I had a friend with a M16 who was reloading, and he told me he was reloading and pushing the bullet at about 3200 fps +/-. I told him he could expect a kaboom if he kept doing that, as he was using this load as his "plinking" rd. I explained to him what he was doing, and he sorta saw my view and changed his loads a good bit. It could be something else, but I expect that the brass is just worn out...the neck gets a lot of abuse on reloads, especially hot ones. Hope this helps. |

That's what it looks like is old brass, but I was under the impression that it was new brass. It's all Winchester. I guess I could pull a few down and see if it looks to have been fired previously. Thanks. Is it the korean win brass The headstamp is "Winchester" over "223 Remington", so I'm guessing it's commercial? The neck is really crimped tight with the neck looking "shrink wrapped" around the projectile. No coloring of the brass is evident like you might see on military cases from annealing. |

I'm going to call it that and carry on. Nothing abnormal happening below the case neck, and as a reloader, it's not unusual to see a neck split.
The ammo's not very accurate in my AR's, so I might try it a Mini 14. It's crimped too well to make pulling the bullets practical for me. I'll designate this stuff as "when everything else is used up" ammo. |
