i went into a local gunshop the other day and they told me not to get steel cased ammo for my spike ar15 because it will ruin my ejectors? is this true?

You'll be fine. I think they are worried about the extractor You could look at it another way also. How much is a new extractor and spring? $25.00. How much will you save on your first case of ammo steel vs brass? $100.00. I practice with steel period...
