Hello what is the typical cheaper plinking ammo people use. I dont want match grade but also dont want crap. I plan on buysing a few diff boxes and seeing what works best in my AR. Thanks

brown bear is great for plinking.

Always been reliable for me, better than wolf or tula.

.22 remington from walmart. If you are about saving money and just plinking, I'd suggest a conversion kit.

I've had good luck with PMC and BVAC.   My preference is PMC, but the BVAC was a lot less for a long time that I've shot more of that in the past couple years. Golden Tiger, Silver or Brown Bear are also pretty good if a bit dirty.

Sounds like you are just getting started with your AR? If so.. very cool. For plinking, the Russian stuff works great in my ARs.. Wolf, Tula, Silver Bear.. all of it shoots great. Silver Bear being my fav and Tula my fav for blasting with friends just because it's so cheap. It's all good stuff, just slightly lower quality than the more expensive brands.

But I would like to say, I wasted lots and lots of brass when I got started because I didn't realize I would eventually want to start reloading. If you get into your AR, you have a good chance of getting the reloading bug. So... looking back, I wish I would have skipped the Russian ammo and just bought brass cased only... and kept it all.... so I could have had it when I decided to start reloading.

So the question you need to ask yourself is, "do I think I might ever reload for my AR?" If there is any if at all.. buy PMC / American Eagle ammo and save all of your brass. If you think no, no... well, ask yourself again... :) but in that case, try the steel stuff in your AR and if it shoots ok for you.. have at it.

With that, the AE is more like real M193, so it's hotter, crimped primers etc... and better ammo IMO over the PMC. The PMC bronze however has amazingly good brass with no crimp which is great for reloading, but it is NOT loaded as hot as the AE. I generally try to get the American Eagle 223 or 556 stuff... (they are different). I don't buy any expensive brands of ammo... that's what reloading is for, making expensive ammo cheap.

Be safe and have fun!

I only buy Russian stuff now for taking friends to the range that have never shot before and just want to get the experience of the bang from shooting an AR.
