Which is the better "manstopper" round?  Frangible ammo is quite expensive, is it much better for defense than a good hollow point round?

Frangible is more deadly if your up close (under 100-150 YDS). After 100 or more yds Hollow Points seem to do better. IMHO.
For best all around ammo I like Hollow points. YMMV.
This is my opinion for 223, however I'm sure others will have different opinions.

I think you're are confusing "frangible" with fragmenting ...

To the OP, you pretty much want to avoid frangible ammo all the way around for serious self-defense purposes.  Fragmenting rounds, OTOH, are an entirely different matter.

Frangible ammo is a terrible option regardless of the range.  I'd recommend that both you and the OP read the FAQ and the "Best choices for self defense ammo" threads.
