Posted this on another forum yesterday with no awnsers. This is a cup and draw set showing how a .50 cal AP is made in 18 steps.  I'm missing #13, just after the lead ball (.355").  Any clue to what #13 would be?  Lead sleve maybe?  Or where I can get another one?  Was purchased for $40 at Columbia SC gun show.  It was put together with brass screws so not to corrode the gliding metal jackets.  Thanks wolf

pretty cool

I had no idea a 50cal AP bullet had that many inserts

Those aren't inserts, they're just the various stages of drawing the copper cup out into a jacket.

Does anyone know the purpose of the lead ball?

This is just a guess:

After placing the AP core inside the lead is placed in the rear of the projectile and melted to seal it.

Just the opposite. The lead goes into the jacket, then the core is pressed in, forcing the lead to fill the space in the point of the jacket, There is no lead at the base.

The missing piece is probably the AP core in it's raw, unshaped form. A piece of bar stock prior to being turned on a lathe and heat treated.
