I see on some of the Privi and IMI XM193 they have the sealer around the primer and case neck.  I shoot a lot of the Federal XM193 from Palmetto and AIM.  I noticed it does not have the sealer.  Why, and should I buy the Privi or IMI for my SHTF stash?  I thought all the mil-spec rounds had the sealer?

Ahhhh!  They are not all MIL-SPEC!  But they are 223Rem.  If you have the chance to get IMI for a good price do it!

My XM193 from Palmetto  has sealant at the neck. LC10 headstamp.  What stamp is on yours?

I went with IMI M193.  Too many stories about the newer manufactured Federal stuff popping primers has me not wanting to trust it for HD/SHTF applications.

LC01 - not sure if that helps.

Are you sure? My last recent order from them was LC10. If it's recent I doubt it was 01....................................................just asking.

SHTF =
Bonded SP like Bear Claw etc.
75gr TAP /  MK262

I use M193/M855/SS109 for range use.

I would pick IMI over LC anyday

Might be 10.  It was a recent order, so it probably is.  Is it loaded to 5.56 pressure, just not mil spec in the fact that it has no sealant?  I'll be switching to IMI from here on out.

I have TAP for HD/mild SHTF.  Longer term though, it's M193, so it looks like I better get some better stuff.

Did you actually pull the bullet out?  Or were you just looking for the black tar / asphalt residue?

Seems to me like you should work on Mk262 or 262-like ammo for SHTF.  a couple hundred rounds a year builds up over time.  The M193 should be last-ditch back-up/practice ammo.

I'll take you up on that and pick some up.  Thanks for the recommendation.

I didn't pull the bullet out, just looking for it on the outside like you see on the IMI stuff.  So, I guess I don't really know if it had it.

So, overall, it sounds like Federal XM193 isn't good for SHTF.  Right?

It isn't that it is not good stuff, it does exactly as it was designed.  But, as a civilian you have the option to use bullets with better terminal effects then M193.

If I WAS stockpiling ammo for SHTF, I would stockpile MK 318 mod 0.

But I am not... Nothing to see here.

I've noticed purplish primer sealant on the batches of XM193 I've shot('08-'10 production). It's not as prominent as the Prvi cartridges for example, but it is there. I've never pulled any of the projectiles but a few look like they have sealant/tar in the case mouth.

I am assuming that the XM193 sold in bulk packs is in fact 5.56 and not .223?

I've shot them by the crates.  I've heard about popped primers for years now, but have never experienced it myself.  Knock on wood.

Precisely, why limit yourself?  Unless you're broke like me, then you're stuck with AE .223, XM-193, PMC and the like

If it was marked as XM-193, then it is 5.56.  If it was marked as AE.223 "tactical", then it is .223.  The packaging can look the same (black) so it can be deceiving.  I stock up on both of them, along with PMC and occasional Winchester White box (because I have no $$$).  POI is obviously different when shooting from the bench; about 2 inches left or right, but that is negligible and you won't even notice it when you are runnin' and gunnin'.
