A guy next to me at the range was shooting .308 w/ LC brass and he didn't reload so he said I could have it.  Some of the brass has the noraml LC 07 (or whatever year) and the Nato cross.  Some of it has that and an LR also, so it says LC LR 07.  What does the LR mean?  Did it come from M118LR or something?

There were also some in there that said PMJ, is that South Korean stuff?

That's kind of what I was thinking, but it is strange to me that they would use different brass w/ a different headstamp.  I'll re-ask this in the relaoding forum, maybe somebody there knows more about this brass.

yes, Lake City Long Range.  M118 LR 173 grain serria? match king  hollow pt..  Military paid .52 cents each back in 1995 when new. Very desireable for reloaders.   Not to be confused with M118 special ball at 175.5 grain with the head stamp of Match or NM, for national match.   On civilian market, a full box of loaded M118LR goes for around $35- , which is comparable to Federal Gold Match.  Each round is individualy maded and wieghed.  Some boxes are marked PD in the lot # which stands for Police Dept issue, not as desireable.  Ive always saved mine and I don't even reload!

Your info is mixed up.  M118LR is a 175 SMK. Its brass is marked LR, its desirable, and the primers are not crimped in. The M118 special ball brass is not marked other than LC and a year. M852 brass is marked LC, year, and MATCH.

PD stands for 'pull down' and signafies that the rounds have been reconstructed from components reclaimed from manufacturing batches that didn't 'make the grade' first time around.

When Lake City puts out a 'batch' of ammo, it gets inspected and graded. All 'firsts' go to the military. 'Seconds' have some dented brass of other flaws in the batch and are sold as practice grade. 'Pull downs' are batches that are seperated into components, the bad stuff thrown out, and then the good components are reassembled. As the projectiles were pulled, they may have pull marks.

I've never had any measureable deficiencies in the M118 LR pd's that I have shot, it's just not Tier 1 military grade ammo.

I bought a couple thousand rounds of pd's and now reload the brass. I've got the performance of the M188 LR dialed-in with my reloads and they cost a fraction of the price.

So there isn't anything different about the brass then, is there?  I weighed some of them against regualr LC and some FC commercial brass.  The LC LR was a grain or 2 heavier than the LC or FC, but all 3 seemed to hold the same amount of powder.

Thanks for the info.

Yes the PMJ headstamped stuff is Korean.  It is good stuff, at least in my experience.  The ammo runs fine in M240s, and I assume the brass would be as good as LC for reloading.

dont assume

The brass is "harder" from what I have seen than LC and the case walls are thinner, more like the newer win/commercial brass.

The closest brass to LC, is Privi, or old (60-70s era) win

Well Sir I'll will step back and take your word for that.  I have not reloaded any of the brass myself.  I only know that my 240 eats that stuff like candy and it seems to shoot no different from the Lake City.  When we do a range again I will look at the brass compared to a piece of LC brass.  Thanks for the correction.

Section it down the long side of the case, you will need to grind it flat to see the actual width of the case. The bottom half is where you will see the greatest difference

It should shoot the same at LC, the PMC I shot in a 50, does the same as the LC
