I'm looking at some 5.56 70 gr. Barnes TSX for deer hunting.  Does this company (SSA) manufacture decent ammunition?  Are they equal to Black Hills, Corbon, Winchester, etc?

I've shot plenty of their 55gr FMJ and 77gr OTM rounds and have been very happy with their products.  They manufacture some great ammunition.

Much higher quality than most others out there. I shoot a ton of it in my 6.8. It is in my estimation better than any Hornady, Federal higher end ammo, or any mainstream ammo company out there. I would say Lapua is as good or a tad better, but not much, and not enough to pay the extra cost. That said, I've run just about every match grade ammo available through my M1a, and through my 5.56s. My M1a did like Black Hills, and their 5.56 stufff is excellent. If you reload, the cases are top notch, and can be used many times more than most other brands before you see any degradation. THe main reason I mention Lapua is the brass issue, it is consistent and has a similar life span.

artie,
SSA has their 5.56MM 70gr. TSX on sale but it shows out of stock just now: http://www.ssarmory.com/556ammunition-70gr-leadfree.aspx. I would just put it on back order so as to have it by the hunting season. The case purchased directly from SSA a few months back for use this coming season used  LC 09 5.56mm brass. AFAIK, SSA is the only manufacturer producing a 5.56MM 70gr. TSX loading for sale to the public and it is of very high quality. Maybe BLACK HILLS will manufacture some for sale to the public if & when the WOT slows down. Until then, the SSA loading will do very nicely.

5.56MM 70gr. TSX fired into water barrier@100yds. from 10" Colt to test expansion measured 0.47" across petals:

Check out Palmetto State Armory, they have the SSA 5.56 77gr OTM MK262 type for 18.72 a box in stock.

When it comes to a 5.56 77gr. SIERRA MATCHKING OTM load, I have been using the BLACK HILLS MK262 MOD 1 SECONDS for about 4 years now. It has yielded very high velocity with extreme accuracy all the way out until it approaches sub-sonic velocity at 750yds. when fired from an accurized 18" SPR type rifle. The BLACK HILLS 77gr. MK 262 MOD 1 loading in any of its forms is pretty hard to compete against when it comes to consistent accuracy from a weaponized loading. Only 5.56MM 77gr. non-cannelured /non-crimped OTM MATCH loadings have grouped a little tighter for me than BLACK HILLS MK262 MOD 1 SECONDS (by 0.1-0.2 MOA).  That is why I think that if anyone can get a 5.56MM 70gr. TSX loading to shoot a little tighter than the SSA loading, I would expect it to be BLACK HILLS.

BLACK HILLS 5.56MM 77gr. SIERRA MK OTM MK 262 MOD 1 SECONDS@500yds & 100yds: 4.14" & 0.61"/MV: 2825 FPS/ES: 38.2 FPS/SD: 15.58 FPS
