So I am fairly new to AR's and I was wondering why we don't see any surplus imported 5.56?

Everyone carries surplus .308, is the 5.56 simply gone and I got in the game too late to take advantage?

Will we ever see it again?

I think it might be because it's still a currently used caliber so it's being used up right away instead of being stored like they used to back in the cold war era.

There is still some out there, you just have to look for it:

I don't think you'll ever see the amount that we saw in the late 90's early 2000's. There were some deals to be had back then. And that is for any number of reasons, the war, price of metal, the ability to import stuff, the number of new shooters who want ammo and are willing to pay more for it, etc etc.

Yeah, those 300rd South African battle packs for $30 were schweet!  I should have maxed out a credit card on those babies.
