I shoot 200-300 rounds of 9mm a week and pretty much just shoot Federal from WalMart (I have a pile of Winchester, UMC and Federal 9mm handgun ammo).  I also have adequate supplies of Aquilla, UMC and Winchester for my other caliber handguns.  Of course I buy a limited supply of high quality defense rounds for all my handguns.

When it comes to my AR's I have a crap-load of Centurion, a chunk of UMC, a little American Eagle (some tracer some not).  The point is, I don't have any specialty rounds for the AR's.  Am I missing something?  Do I need some high quality ammo for SHTF time?

Get some mil spec ammo (5.56) in bulk, lock it in an ammo can and you are good to go for SHTF. If you have the $$$ the add some 75-77gr specialty ammo thats out there but make sure you fill the void of the bulk 5.56 ammo stored for the long haul.

What your doing is not really wrong... but it may be "better", or you may be more prepared, etc if you stick to a standard, like a hot military round.  M193 is a good fit, probably what most people do, and its almost the cheapest brass cased 5.56 anyways.   You may want to keep heavier stuff if you have a SBR.  You probably want to keep something suitable for hunting deer sized game, if you have to have it during a prelonged shtf.

I buy only two kinds of ammo for the AR.  Cheapest brass cased I can find for plinkin', and 75gr OTM for defense.

I got Silver Bears for plinking and PMC 55 grainers for well... shtf.

I realized after joining this site that some if not alot of people use PMC just for plinking.I suppose it wont hurt to have some good quality ammo but i figure any ammo is better than nothing.

Just delivered to my office - 900 rds of XM193 compliments of Lucky Gunner.  I'll repackage half of it into three bandoleers to add to my SHTF collection and shoot the rest.

When the zombie apocolypse does finally happen, from my estimation there will be about 1,000 rounds of stockpiled SHTF ammo in the country for every 1 zombie.

I like having Hornady TAP or another quality 75 gr OTM round on hand for any possible defensive need ot SHTF.  I just have a few magazines of this and then plenty M193 and other cheaper stuff.
