I am going to do some Redneck terminal ballistic testing tomorrow. I'll be pointing my AR at some phone books just to see what will happen. I will be sure to post the results with pics here. But I need a starting point...has anyone done this? About how many inches of phone book will I need to stop the bullet and be able to examine it?

Also a local FBI guy will be in attendance with a genuine Vietnam era M16A1. We will be doing some mag dumps! HAHA!!! I have not fired a full auto gun yet!

Hopefully, we will be detonating some Tannerite too.

Strangely enough, this topic was just on Mythbusters last week. I think something like 3 phonebooks and the glass of a side window could stop a .308. Of course, it depends on where you live and how many people have phones there.

A local guy was in the process of building a log cabin and was curious how well his logs would protect someone inside from gunfire outside.  He brought a section of log about a foot in diameter down to the range to test it out.  The 55 grain BTHP .223 ammo we shot at it produced nice clean little holes all the way through at 50 yards.  It was kind of eye opening to see just how little cover something that sturdy looking actually provides.

Wasn't it 3 after hitting the window but 4 1/2 of just phone books? BTW the phone books were like large metropolitan thick phone books.

Thats true. It changes if the window is hit first, probably because the bullet is deformed. My guess would also be LA phonebooks. All I really learned is that I need a Barrett .50.

Moving to the ammo forum.

[ETA] Just make sure you don't assume the wet phone books correlate to living tissue in a reliable manner.

What's the force of the recoil on one of those Barrets? That one didn't have the sliding barrel. At 2:18 there it looks like she got rocked pretty hard.

I was testing some last weekend with some scraps of sheet rock.  I was shooting through 16 layers of 5/8" and then into a steel plate to catch the projectiles.  I shot 55gr hornady training at it, and they stayed together, I shot some 77gr SSA 5.56 at it, and the core fragmented slightly and flattened, and the copper core stayed intact, but peeled.

Think 12 guage 3" mag slugs and + a little.

It aint that bad and they are fun as hell.

Shooting prone the "levitation" effect around from the mussel blast is cool

+1  I love the way everything lifts off the ground and floats down.  The one time I was lucky enough to shoot a model 82A1, I was laying under a maple tree, and there was hundred of the little "helicopter" seeds, I didn't see since I was looking through a scope, but I was told it looked pretty awesome as they all lifted up and slowly swirled back down.

And the recoil is nothing like I expected it. In my opinion is was more like a very firm push instead of a kick. It felt softer to me than shooting slugs from my shotgun.

I do a lot of reloading and test all of them on phone books for signs of pressure, velocity, and just to see what the bullet does. First it depends completely on the weight and type of bullet you shoot into a phone book. For prairie dog shooting I use Hornady Vmax 40-55gr it will usually go through about 2-3 metropolitan size phone books and they also tend to shred the paper pretty bad. If you go with standard 55gr FMJ or Soft Point it will make it through up 4 to 5 phone books. SS109 with the steel tips get around 5-6 phone books but the best results for penetration were Hornady 75gr BTHP match rounds that would average 7 books.  As with most of the rounds (minus vmax) you could actually follow the tumble as they traveled though the books and the 75gr were long enough that they would either lose there front end or end up looking like a boomerang.

Take these numbers then add two more for protection on the other side (a water pipe in the house getting a .22 embedded in it flooding the floor because I didn't follow that advice). Also bring a bunch it only takes about 12-20 to totally ruin a bunch of phone books
