Can someone explain the difference between M855 ammo and SS109? Are they both green tip penetrator rounds? And why does everyone go ga-ga over them vs the M193 rounds?

Dang, now my head hurts and I'm even more confused.

I did figure out that SS109 is the NATO designation and M855 is the US military designation for the same round.

Just to make your head hurt even more, the original lots of M855 were loaded with SS109.  And then there's this . . .

Never seen headstamps like that before.

I actually lost an argument on another forum on this subject, as I was under the impression that SS109 was just the NATO designation for the projectile, while M855 was our ammunition utilizing this bullet.  However, NATO does specifiy a velocity for the SS109 so it can be considered a "load".

Simple explanation:

SS109 = name for FN's BULLET

M855 = US military specification of a loaded round of ammunition, using something like the SS109 bullet.

The drawing is from D. McCoy's BRL report from 1985.

Thanks for posting that drawing. I thought I remembered reading that the SS109 and M855 bullets differed in dimensions and construction, but wasn't sure of my memory on the subject.

IIRC, other countries –– Canada and Britain, for example –– also made changes to the SS109 design.
