I had a 3day rifle course last week. One of the guys brought 1k of Ultramax (5.56)  and several hundred rounds of the steel cased Hornandy. On several occasions the brass on the Ultramax split along the side from the neck all the way down. The instructor opened up a box and began pulling the bullets out of the casings by hand. You could pretty much pick out the ones that were improperly crimped (if at all) just by looking at them. The hornandy steel did pretty well, however there were several instances where the round being ejected just slid to the top of he receiver and the new round fed in right beneath it causing a goofy double feed.

And for the record I shot about 800rds of M193 in a brand new unfired S&W M&P15 with no problems at all.

Ultramax 5.56? I have only seen Ultramax .223 and have used several different types (55gr FMJ, 55gr Bal Tip and 68gr HP) and have never had any problems at all. Any specific details on the type of Ultramax ammo it was?

I was given a hundred rounds of Ultramax .223 soft points from someone at the range after it jammed their gun. I had the same issues of bullet set back and returned the ammo to Ultramax. They sent FMJ and it worked ok.

Slightly of topic. I picked up a couple of hundred pent cases of Ultramax from someone at the same range. Many of the primer pockets were very loose when I reloaded the brass. Strange for LC brass that was only fired twice (once when new and once after Ultramax reload).

Bottom rank ammo. Black hills are the only reman ammo I would ever use.

you are correct- it was .223 ammo. I believe it was 55gr but don't quote me on that.

I've never had a sinlge problem with Ultramax and it used to be my normal range ammo until Dick's started raising their prices above $.28/rd. I've shot a few thousand rounds in 3 diff rifles w/o issue.

That said, I've only ever read of issues with Ultramax purchased in bulk, usually from Cabela's. Not once have I read of an issue with the 135rd(SP) or150rd(FMJ) boxes that Dick's sells. I don't know what the difference is, just an observation.

I bought 200 rds of ultramax a while back and will never buy it again.  in 7 out of 10 rds the bullet set WAY back into the case during feeding, some sending the bullet all the way back into the case body.  I should have stopped shooting and returned it.  I got it to feed 50% by using some old orlite mags with cracked feed lips (?).  had a few primers come loose and bind up the gun.  I think one of them squibbed and i didnt notice it and found a buldge in the barrel after shooting it.

if you have some i would recommend returning it if possible or at least running it all through a crimp die

It is the WORST ammo i have personally every used including about 10k of wolf and countless rds of surplus, remanufactured and no-name junk i have shot in the last decade.

PS mine was a bulk pack from scheels in Iowa city

I bought a 150-round box from Dick's a while back when I was in a pinch for some range fodder.

It functioned fine but it's way too expensive for what it is.
