Has anyone Chrono'ed and monarch .223 by any chance?
I want to run it on a ballistics calc so I can have a starting point out to 500 yards. I usually do not shoot the stuff but I am going to be teaching a group of guys to shoot this weekend and I don't feel like letting them burn up my hand loaded match ammo. |

Let me rephrase .. Im going to be letting a group of guys shoot my rifle this weekend ... Not teach to shoot.. not real worried about accuracy.. I just want to get them hitting steel out to 500.
But yeah I stopped using the monarch cause I opened a package one time and 2 rounds had no Projectile... Every time I shoot it now I take each individual round .. shake it for powder.. check the primer.. and make sure the bullet is not loose :( ... |

| I've never had a single issue with Monarch (Barnaul) .223. I HAVE had a few issues with Winchester Q3131a having goofed up cases or bullets. I think your experience is just a bad batch and that Academy will quickly and cheerfully replace your ammo with a brand new box without any fuss. |

Steel cased...Barnaul makes the Monarch branded 223. Brass cased... Prvi makes the Monarch branded 223. Just check the head stamps. Oh after rereading what you posted....Monarch is Academy branded ammo made by certain manufacturers. Appears to mostly be Barnaul and Prvi. |

It's the only ammo I've used that keyholed at 50yrds. I have started threads about this, thought I was the only one. Nope. I was visiting a friend in San Antonio and did some shooting at a local range. I decided to try some of the monarch ammo my buddy had through my rifle and when I checked my target I could hardly believe it. |

the red boxed 55 gr. soft point and FMJ is great ammo for the range.....shot tons of it, with all going bang. It's all red box now, with "Brass" or "Steel" on the label. All of the "Monarch Brass" I've ever seen has been Prvi, while all the steel has been Barnaul. |

Well an update after the weekend of shooting guys...
Out of 100 .223 steel monarch rounds we had 3 ftf. All 3 had very heavy primer strikers... Just no ignition. out of 100 9mm rounds of monarch steel we had 1 ftf due to no ignition. When I sighted in my bull barrel at 100 I had a hard time keeping under 1 moa with 3-5 shot groups. I have shot .5 groups with decent factory ammo and I have shot .35 with my handloads. I did not have any FTE's in my bull barrel, those listed above were in two seperate ar-15's ( bushmaster and a RRA) Both stock guns from factory. |

I looked at that stuff over the weekend at an Academy in Dallas...I was surprised at how expensive it was. $9.99 for a box of the brass-cased stuff soft-points. I was hoping for something more on par with Wolf prices, but no such luck. I think for brass stuff that's about as good as it gets...at least off a store shelf. Anything cheaper you're gonna have to order online or go with the steel cased stuff. Monarch is $5.99 a box of 20 at Academy. I don't see it getting any cheaper anymore short of specials. |

I don't see it getting any cheaper anymore short of specials. Right. I asked someone at the firearms counter when they were having another sale. While he didn't know, he did say at some point they would have another sale. Hopefully it will go back down to $3.99/box at least once this year as it did last year. |

We/they only know a week or two in advance. The Ad papers come about two weeks before the Ads are set. Unless someone's got an ear to those who set the Hot Deal dates and prices it's anyone's guess when they'll be cheaper again. I will say our store has about 25 to 30 cases of the steel cased stuff. And we appear to keep getting several more cases a week. |
