I know that they are different, but does someone have a side by side picture of the TAP projectile and the V-max whole and segmented?

| They are not different. Some TAP uses VMAX bullets, some AMAX bullets, depending on caliber. Then there is the BTHP TAP which is different all together. The .223 is a cannelured 75 grain Maornady match bullet, the 5.56 is is own cannelured BTHP with a different ogive (less ballistically efficient) for feeding in M4 rifles. Ohter bullets in the tap line too like the barrier round etc. What round are you reffering to? |

I was specifically looking at the 55 grain v-max vs. the 55 grain tap. (I'm seeing a lot of 55 grain tap showing up for sale, are they just loaded to 5.56 velocities?) I know that there are 60 grain v-max's but are there 60 grain taps like there are 75 grain taps?
I'm just curious because I have over 1K of 55 v-max that (I keep specifically for) I shoot though my 10.3" 1 in 7 twist SBR. They shoot very well through it, I know that penetration must stink from the lack of velocity (barrel length and .223 loading), but I wanted something that would fragment at low velocities. This was the only ammo that I could get large amounts of at still reasonable prices. |

Yes but they do have 55 grain TAP that has the plastic tip.
I'm just curious, because I have seen the wound profiles on the ammo facts page which shows that v-max might not be the best for self defense, but still I would not want to be shot with it, esp at close range x30.... |

What makes them have better penetration through barriers and then expand when hitting soft targets? |

I understand it's actually pretty decent through light barriers as well... |

Unlike the other bullets used in TAP ammo they do not fragment, being a soft point, so the greater retained mass casues deeper penetration in tissue after passing through a barrier. If your bullet fragments or suffers core/jacket seperation and comes apart, the smaller fragments will weigh less and slow down more quickly in tissue resulting in underpenetration. The key to penetration is retained mass and velocity. |
