They used to make  "gray" tip M855 equivalent that had a 62gr lead core bullet.  They called it a match round and it was more accurate than the SS109 bullet.

Not that I've ever seen.  If it's marked M855, it has a green tip.

All the m855 I have seen from IMI has had a green tip.
I have seen lots of SS109 bullets made by them w/o paint, but all the loaded ammo has been marked.

Yes, IMI does make this ammo, however it is called M193.

Factory IMI M855 has the same color green tip as US made LC ammo

Factory IMI M193 does not have painted tips.

That wouldn't be "M855 without green tips" as the OP was asking.  But yeah...  IMI makes M193 too.

M193 would be a 55gr lead core bullet, not 62gr with penetrator.

I know that bud, but if some guy has unpainted IMI factory rounds and he is saying they are 855 but not painted, my point is yes< IMI does make a non painted round but it is the M193.  Good grief.

I remember a few years back Wideners stocked and sold IMI produced 62 grain steel core M855 projectiles for handloaders.  I bought a couple hundred of these here and there.  I remember however that they DID NOT have any paint on them whatsoever.  They looked just like your standard M193 projectile (except a bit longer).

May want to be careful as these may be handloads of an undetermined source.

If your friends ammo is brown boxed cardboard, and still sealed, it may be legit m855.  I have several boxes that I purchased around 1994-1996.  They are 30 round boxes, the front has printed:
CALIBER 5.56 MM
BALL, M855

LOT:        00254/E

There is a back stick on label which states that the manufacturer is TAAS-Israel Industries Ltd. (Which is the same company as IMI)
These were imported by the Hansen Cartrige Company, Southport CT.

I am certain that they are original TAAS/IMI manufacture, not only due to the sealed boxes, but I also saw the ammo dealer I dealt with removing these from their original packing case that he
received them in.  At the time he had a sign out that indicated that they were M855, but they had been manufactured without the green colored tips.  When I asked why, the dealer replied that he
was told by Hansen that they were originally for a contract to a party (country?) that had not adopted a .556 weapon platform that used M193, so like the British (and others), they did not need to
be colored green to indicate M855.  While I cannot validate this dealers story, ( in 30 years of going to gun shows from Ohio to Florida and others, I have seen/heard some real stories!) I can state the
following:

1. It's Israeli - cases are stamped TZZ 94 with a NATO cross - which gives some creedence to the loaded for another country story.
2. It's a M855 or SS109 type of projectile (bullet pulled many years ago to verify)
3. What I shot of it through a Colt 20" H-Bar, AR-15 worked really well, no FTF's of any sort, and as accurate as any other M855 type ammo I've shot since.

I hope this helps,
