I don't see much mentioned about the Corbon DPX  for self defense in the forums.  Seems like they would be a good choice.  What are peoples thoughts on this ammo?  If people do like this round for self defense which would you prefer the Cobon DPX 53gr or the 62gr?

The DPX loads are decent, but there are better choices out there for a primary self-defense load.  If you anticipate a high probability of having to shoot through barriers, then the DPX loads start to pull ahead of the pack.  However, they are lacking in expanded diameter in comparison to the 62 grain TBBC or 64 grain Gold Dots when shooting through auto glass due to the "petals" of the TSX bullet shearing off or collapsing in on themselves upon impact with auto glass.  The 62 grain TSX bullet itself is capable of excellent accuracy.

COR-BON 62 grain DPX

This COR-BON load uses the Barnes 62 grain TSX bullet which has an all-copper construction.  The bullet is much longer than a typical lead core/copper jacketed bullet of the same weight.  This load had a muzzle velocity of 2963 fps from the 20" Colt barrel.  The 10-shot group of record had an extreme spread of 1.75 and a mean radius of 0.61".

I also fired two 10-shot groups of a handload of the Barnes 62 grain TSX for comparison.  The smallest group had an extreme spread of 0.98" and a mean radius of 0.295".

My guess is that you didn't read the "Best Choices for Self Defense Ammo" tacked at the top of the forum.

Sure I did, I read several times.  No where in there could I find any mention of the DPX ammo in relation to the the .223.  Since I  posted this in the AR15 section, I was referring to the the .223/5.56.  It gets a lot of mention in handgun calibers in the article, but no mention in .223 section.  Thus my question.  I may be a noob in AR15's, and the forum, but I do tend to do plenty of reading and searching prior to asking questions.

My bad - I just noticed that I referred to the ammo by its bullet - Barnes TSX. Corbon is the most well-known manufacturer that uses the TSX in their DPX line, so I guess I ought to clarify that for people who may not know.

Now it makes sense!!  You are right, I was not correlating the two.  To be honest as a noob this is one one the most confusing things about ammo.  Often the manufacturer of the bullet is referred to, then I search out that "bullet" and can not find it and am left confused. I am slowly but surely learning.

PS Molon Thanks for your thorough and in depth reply.

Molon,

You do good work. Problem is I do not care about shooting through glass. I worry about penetrating body armour some wacked out freak has on. Or if it will penetrate his skull when I shoot him in the head. I understand the police thing and glass but why is that the standard?
