| I live in Alaska and we are flying out to visit family that lives in the lower 48. My airline allows up 50 pounds of loaded ammo to go with you. I was considering buying while in the states and bringing it back with me. My question is does anybody know what the weight on a case (1000 rds) of 223/5.56 weighs?? Thanks. |

I weighed a PMC 55 grain .223 round. It weight 177.1 grains. A 62 grain bullet would add seven grains to the weight.
A 5.56 round would also be a few grains heavier, I'll esimate about ten grains more for the thicker walls. So each round should weigh about 194 grains, tops. 1000 would equal 194000 grains. Divide by 7000, and you get 27.7 pounds. Now that's just the ammo and doesn't include the packaging which will add a couple of pounds. But you should still be well under your limit. BUT, you'll never be able to get two cases under 50 pounds, no way (unless you go with 45 grain ammo and haul them back in a trashbag). ETA: roach beat me to it, too much math (but at least I was right). |

Before you count on bringing it back with you, you had better make sure there is some here for you to get. I did see a "we" mentioned in your post. Looks like if you can get your companion(s) to carry up to 50# too, sounds like you could split 3 cases between 2 of you. |
