I noticed that a lot of online ammo dealers have blanks for sale.  What exactly is the purpose of buying blanks?  Especially 1000 rounds of them?

Ive never actually fired a blank, but I thought it would be a funny joke to load up a mag with blanks and then let a friend shoot it thinking they were real, then going out to the target and laughing at how they didnt hit the paper even once, lol. (probably would work best with a friend who never shot an ar15)

I dont have enough friends to do this with 1000 rounds, but what other uses could there be for blanks??

It would probably be hard to hide the big red blank firing adapter from your friend...

It is an insane idea to mix blanks and live ammo for any reason.

Well, I wasnt actually planning on buying any blanks.  My main question was just why would anyone else buy them.

No its not an insane idea. Its a very useful training tool. You have a friend load your rounds for the day and have him sneak in blanks every once and a while.. So when you are doing your course of fire what ever it might be it causes a FTE and you can practice your immediate action. We use blanks alot in the Marine Corps. Atleast here at the School of Infantry we do.

Reinactors use them. They use blanks so they don't shoot thier friends playing on the other side. Blanks are also useful for demos.

Hopefully you have some NCO supervision or are the one supervising this activity.  Not going to be very fun at Captains Mast when one of those hard chargers remembers he still has a live ball round and fires it while using a BFA on a training ex.  Mindset...thing.

For most civilians to have blanks and live rounds invites trouble........ie accidental GSWs thinking that they were using blanks or blown out eyes thinking that the blank would do no harm etc...

You can load a cleaning rod into your barrel and shoot them out with blanks...kills bunnies.  I'm sure it wouldn't feel good to be shot with one either.

The Navy base here does at least 25 funerals a week.  The local Federal Cemetery constantly has military funerals.  There are a bunch of old guys (VFW etc.) that do the rifles for the 21 gun salutes.  They go through blanks by the hundereds each month.  Hope that helps.  Navy used to use them to fire line over to another ship for unrep stuff.  Plus they are great for CQB training with faily little risk.
