So I have some available money to start my stockpile of ammo. I want to have a couple thousand rounds saved up for shooting and SHTF/zombie invasion.

What brand of ammo should I look to get for stockpiling? I do not want to spend too much so I am limited in funds. I really no next to nothing about ammo so please bare with me...

I know wolf is cheap but I've heard how it shoots pretty dirty and is under powered causing FTE's.

What about Silver Bear? Brown Bear? US Defense Department military subcontractors?

So what do you guy stockpile?

I am stock-piling PPU M855. So far it seems M855 spec all the way and I got 2MOA out to 200y with it based on 10-shot groups. Good stuff.

Wolf is fine for plinking/general shooting if your rifle will cycle it OK. (All my AR's shoot wolf just fine.)

If you know nothing, a good place to start is the Ammo Oracle and the Best choices for Defensive Ammo

Oh, and don't forget the Ammunition review and reference tacked at the top of the page.

+1 on the PPU M855.  Stuff works great and so far all testing shows it's M855.  Wideners is a good place to look for it.  I need to pick up another case or so myself......

Hell this late in the game you are stuck buying what you can find.  No matter what caliber you buy I would suggest you purchase brass case ammo.  I did and stopped buying steel case ammo last year.  I am now saving all my brass and have thousands of every caliber and recently made a large investment in reloading equipment to reload my 4 primary calibers.  Since ammo has sky rocketed I plan on spending all available funds on additional bullets, primers, powder and brass.  In the event they ban it, tax it or the prices keep increasing I will not be near effected if at all.  In the next 60 days I plan on having 8k plus brass cases for 9mm, 45acp, 223 and 308.  I am pretty much there already, I plan on 10k plus bullets in each caliber and 20k plus primers for each caliber.  I will continue to purchase bullets as I use what I have reloaded.  I am lucky that I still have several thousand factory rounds of each caliber to shoot so I will be producing my own brass stocks.

I was smart 4 years ago and bought 60 bags of shot for trap and skeet.  The prices went up to $38 a bag this last year and I was still loading shot I paid $12.50 for so I was able to keep my cost down.  I also bought primers at 50k at a time and saved over $30 per 10k in price increases.  I am a firm believer of stocking up as much as you can as often as you can.  We have not seen price decreases in many years and we won't be anytime in the future.  Buy now or pay more later.

Cheapest quality ammo is the Prvi Partizan M193: http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=7169
Nothing wrong w/steel cased ammo for plinking/practice but stick w/quality brass-cased for your "social" ammo.

What kind of rifle do you have? What caliber? What kind of location-  city, country, back country, wooded, plains? A lot depends on these things. I keep for a Mini-14- Radway Green M855 (can't get anymore), Privi M193, Barnual Brown Bear (Monarch Brand- not in Cali), For 7.62X39 I keep Brown Bear and Silver Bear. I don't keep any 308. I do keep 243. WJ

They had .223REM by UMC (Remmy) for, get this, $10/box/20) ON SALE !!!! .50 a round=$500.00 case.

If'n I was you, I'd start buying anything and everything I could put my mitts on.

Lookey like the sky is gonna be the limit on ammo prices.

I cant believe I left out the caliber I was looking for... 5.56x45

I have a AR-15 that I built myself. It has a 16" BCM Mid-length for a upper, a BCM BCG, Stag Lower, and a RRA NM 2 Stage LPK to just mention the internals. I've been told the BCM BCG's ussually have no problems with Wolf ammo.

I live in a large suburb type area in a city called Aliso Viejo right near the ocean.

So I'll buy wolf ammo for practice and stock pile some good brass cased ammo for the zombie/alien invasion.

Thank again for all of the help

don't waste you money on the wolf.  it's not that it's that bad, but if steel cased, steel jacketed (copper gilded), dirty ammo is only 10 cents per round cheaper, you're better off getting reloadable brass cased ammo which will be roughly 30-50% more accurate.   you built a good gun, feed it well and you'll come home from the range with a big smile.  i have shot lots of wolf and never had a misfire or jam.  but it fills the upper with red sealant gunk and carbon blowback, requiring much more cleaning.  on top of that, most "bulk" brass cased M193-type ammo is 1.5" for me versus 3" with wolf.  for my money, i'll take reusable brass.

I go with wolf and the better stuff.  Sometimes it is nice to have to be paranoid about saving your brass.

In Kalifornia aren't you limited to 5 rounds?

10 round magazines in a "evil feature" rifle.

But I have some pre-ban 30 round magazines for out of state shoots.

Check the hometown forum, I'm pretty sure you're limited to 10rds in CA.  calguns.net is also a good site to check out.

I am guessing the ones you have seen where either

A. 10/30 or 10/20 magazines. Meaning they have a 30 or 20 round body but only hold 10 rounds.

Or

B. Featureless builds which allow for the use of pre-ban magazines. And by featureless I mean no pistol grip, collapsible stock, bayonet lug, or flash suppressor.

If you are using anything higher than a 10 round magazine and have more than 2 "evil features" on your rifle you are committing a felony and can land in some deep shit.

Read up on California law before you take your rifle out to the range again.

I don't know what was happening with your silver bear ammo, but I was just out shooting silver bear ammo today (60's and sunny).  My experience wasn't that bad...  I was shooting off a bench (no bipod or sandbags, just my vert grip and a towel for support) and I was hitting 2-3" 10 shot groups at 50 yards.  This may be what you consider all over the target, but it isn't all over the target for me.  Especially when I wasn't using a stable platform to begin with.

So my experience with it was good enough to justify the $115 per 500 rounds I paid for it a couple months ago...

I love Silver Bear!  I've shot over 5k in the past two years without a single issue.  Most of that was done 1000 at a time in classes. I've also shot about 2000 of the Brown Bear.  I take which ever is cheaper.  Brown or Silver 55 or 62 grain, FMJ or HP.  It all works well and is much better than Wolf in every way.  Its cheaper, more accurate, and functions 100% in every AR I've tried it in.  I just got in 3K today of the Brown Bear 55 grain FMJ.  I'll have it all loaded into mags by they weekend.

Thanks again for the help everyone.

A little off topic but I love telling everyone... My Troy BUIS just came in the mail today from Larue Tactical. The swag is kick ass and the love the dillo bottle opener (I've mis-read that word so many times).

So I officially have a completed AR-15 after 6 months in the making
