How does everyone out there store their ammo stockpiles?? Other than in the sealed BattlePacks... I have some loose and some in Midway flip top boxes.
Factory Boxes? Ammo Cans? On Stripper Clips? Loaded in mags for the Zombies??? Just curious... Thanks!! Drew |

Loose, on strippers, or in mags???
Is there any harm storing ammo loose? I have some reloaded stuff (I did it all, so I'm confident of the quality) and I just want an idea of the safest bet. It won't be jostled around or dropped off of any trucks or the like... Should there be a dessicant in the can? I think that was the point of my thread. Sorry I didn't specify... |

I don't store any loose. A lot of people do and it shouldn't be a problem.
I store mine in various ways. All of the good stuff is in ammo cans. It's either in mags, original boxes, or on strippers. Some are in bandoleers. The practice/blasting ammo I just keep in the original case box. When the case is empty I just throw the empty box away. |
| I keep all my ammo in GI cans with a couple dessicant packs on the top of each one. I put a piece of maksing tape on the front and wright the caliber info on it. I also use the same method for AR mags. I have 16 cans and they sell for $5 in my neck of the woods. GI cans are rugged to say the least and will also stack neatly so they don't require a lot of storeage room. I have about 10 mags loaded, two bandoleers loaded with stripper clips and the rest is either loose (XM193) or still in the original 20 round boxes. |

I live in a very dry state so I'm not concerned with humidity. I have three cans filled with ammo for long term storage. Those I do have desiccant in. |

Everything is placed in ammo cans...I ran out and fortunately I found a place who had some. I found ammo cans at guns shows recently...I have about 10 extra ammo cans and have about 12k rounds of ammo stored in ammo cans. I plan to buy more ammo cans for storage..You can never have enough ammo cans or ammo for that matter.

| don't mean to hijack the tread but how "rugged" are the ammo cans? The ones I have are 50 cal military issue. At the Army surplus store that I bought them at they said they are waterproof and fireproof, I don't mean to doubt uncle sam but that seems a little bit farfetched. |

They are water proof not sure how much of a fire rating they have, maybe 20 minutes

Waterproof forever, as long as the gasket holds out (keep it out of the sun; heat and UV will break the gasket down over time) and the can doesn't rust. For reeeeeally long-term storage you'll want to seal your ammo up in watertight plastic anyway, and put some dessiccant inside. Unfortunately, I've lost all my ammo in a series of tragic boating accidents but if I knew exactly where it ended up on the bottom I could probably go back and get it, it's so damn well packed. Fireproof? Someone from that surplus store can throw a box loaded with their best IMI M855 into the bonfire, and report back to the board with the results. |

Great story from a related thread (hat-tip to XM21nick): Quoted: Back in the later 70's while in the Army we went one summer to Ft. Drum to train NG's. One day out in the field we were digging fighting positions when we dug up two 30 caliber ammo cans that some GI or NG buried back in the 50's or 60's. The cans were rusty but still sealed and intact. Inside was belted 30 caliber ammo. It looked like it was brand new, no corrosion from being buried for so long. The only bad thing was it was blank ammo. As for the date on the ammo I can't remember what it was. |
