I am in the process of buying a S&W M&P15 rifle. I've been spending the last two days searching high and low for a good ammunition to run through this weapon (for the mods, I've looked all over the forum as well). I have found reviews from the Federal XM-193 55gr. to be quite positive. There is a case of 500 online for $274. Good Deal? Should I keep looking?

I would keep looking.   Thats pretty high.   XM193 is good shit to plink with or stash.

Sorry, I meant to clarify I did want that for plinking. That is the best deal I've been able to find thus far......What would be a considerable self defense round to search for? The Hornady TAP seems like a good round. The M&P is a 5.56, and I've heard that even though 223 works......5.56 is better overall.

That is very high for those rounds, pre-election you could find xm-193 for $.35-.37 per round, I believe once this panic buying has subsided prices will fall within reason. I would pass on that ammo and wait it out or buy something like privi which can be found for much cheaper and will perform just as well for plinking.

Definitely will do. I've read it's a dirtier ammo, but I clean my sig like a maniac....so that shouldn't matter. I just checked out the TAP and it almost seems to be a buck a round.....

A local shop has 500rd case of Federal XM-193 C for 199.95. Is there a difference with the "C" added on the end? Or, should I say what does the "C" mean?

Try these two dealers(they both advertise on AR15.com).

http://www.palmettostatearmory.com/

http://www.g2gtactical.com/main.sc

G2G prices includes shipping($235 for 500 rds XM193)

Palmetto state armory($399 for 900 rds XM193A on 10 rd stripper clips- $12 for shipping)

For today's situation these prices are the best I can find and if they are too high just wait and see if the prices come down(btw thats what I'm doing but I already have a good supply of 5.56 and eventually I'll buy more).

Have you had a chance  to read what AR15.com has to say about "best choices for defensive ammunition"?  Try it(it's tacked at the top of the "ammunition" main page):

I've looked at it to an extent.(That's where I got the idea to go with 5.56 Horady TAP). I've been scouring google looking for reviews as of late.

Northwest Tactical Supply has 20rd. 5.56 cases of TAP(55gr. or 75gr.) for 19.50 a piece.

Are you concerned about over penetration?

That will impact your decision.

"C" stands for Commercial and comes in 20 round boxes
"A" comes on 10 rounds stripper clips

I am concerned about over penetration. After looking at the 75gr TAP on the defense thread, I'm still leaning that way. It seems to be the best around, I just don't know if there are any places that offer them for less that 1 dollar a round.

75gr NOT for over penetration.  Go the 55 grain route; it'll still knock em around like a rag doll.

The 75gr TAP is probably one of my most favorite rounds. But it will penetrate indoors more than say the 60 gr TAP. I use the 60gr only because I live in an Apartment. If I lived in a Regular house I'd use the 75gr TAP or some reloads with a 75gr or 72gr bullet.

Have you read that monster of a tread by Molon about 75gr TAP?.  If not set aside a few hours and read it.

Haven't checked it out yet. I do have a 500 12 gauge for my apartment though. Thanks again for all of the feedback! I'm going to grab those LE TAP's for sure!

So What do you have in your shotgun? Nothing lighter that 0 buckshot I hope.
But ya a shotgun is probably the next choice after an auto-loading rifle.

It definitely is the second choice
I'm running the Powershok Federal. I don't have the box in front of me, but I believe its 00 Buckshot. Got a few slugs for the difficult ones.....
