| I will be hunting in Oklahoma this fall with my DPMS .308. Any suggestions on what load to use? Distance to feeder #1 is only 50 yards. Distance to feeder #2 is 150 yards. I was thinking of using Winchester 150 grain Ballistic Tip. |

It is difficult to guess which brand of ammunition or bullet will perform best with which particular rifle. Why not try several different brands and see which one delivers the best accuracy. As far as terminal performance on Whitetails, the 150 grain ballistic tip 308 seems to work well. I would not look for the cheapest ammunition; I would look for ammunition that delivered the best accuracy and performance even if I had to pay a little more for it. Even if the range you will be shooting is only 50 -150 yards, accuracy is still vital. We hunt in north central Oklahoma just south (barely) of the Oklahoma /Kansas state line and shots at 175-300 yards are common. Good luck with your hunt, it looks like another good deer season in Oklahoma. The population is still high and many areas allow one buck and two does during rifle season.

I have hit deer with 150gr Core Loct rounds out of my 30-06 and have been very impressed with terminal performance of this round and the accuracy of this round out of my ruger M77 is WAY better than the Winchester Ballistic tips and a helluva lot cheaper.
Buy based on accuracy not price. |

I'm going to the range tomorrow, I'll pick up a few boxes of some different loads and figure out what works best.
Arcane6-1 - I'll be hunting in the Oologah area betwwen Hwy 169 and US 75. Was it just me or were the deer a little thin last year? I wondered if that huge ice storm that rolled in not long after rifle season had anything to do with it. Funny how animals know what is happening and get gone when they need to. |

Oklahoma has had a mixed blessing of an over abundance of deer for the last few years. Over population is becoming a problem in quite a few areas. The Oklahoma Fish and Game Dept. has tried to control it by increasing the doe harvest. Whether it is working or not is still not clear as many areas are still permitted to harvest two does during rifle season. Deer season was a little strange last year, on opening week end all that we saw were bucks and they were moving all day long. The does were really inactive; on the second week end the does were thick as could be. The area you are hunting should be a very productive one.

Some wal-marts carry the Federal Power Shok blue box ammo that is loaded with Speer hot Core bullets its a soft point it has always performed very well for me and its only 12 something a box for .308 same price for 30-06. I thnk they have 150 and 180 grain.
Also Federal is doing the $5 off a box rebate again with up to 2 boxes and $10 off. All Power Shok rifle Ammo That would make it about $7 something for a box of quality federal hunting ammo. You cant come close to beating that with any other brand. The Federal Premium Ammo has a rebate also of $10 a box with up to 2 boxes and $20 that a really good deal also with a lot of specialty bullets they have loads with. |
| I just got back from a deer hunt in Southern Utah. 2 out of the six hunters in out party were succesful (not me unfortunately). The first deer was a big 3X3 that dropped instantly to a 165 gr Remington Accutip from a 30-06 at 120 yds. The other deer was a good sized spikey that fell to a 150gr Ballistic tip handload (MV 2650) at 100yds or so. I have found that polymer tipped bullets will feed smoother in semi-automatics than loads that use soft lead tips. Pick something that is accurate and reliable in your rifle. Also note that good deer loads can often double as excelent tactical loads if SHTF. |

I don't hunt often due to working all the time....
For whitetails, any .308 that's not FMJ. However FMJ would prob also work but not legal or the best choice. A long time ago I did go out and shoot a deer with one of my FAL's. I was using some .308 150 gr soft point from Yugoslavia or somewhere. I was all I could find on short notice. I shot the deer right behind the shoulder. The round went through a rib on the way in and through another rib on the way out. The hole in both ribs was the same size, which lead me to believe that the bullet did not expand very much, if any at all. The inside of this deer's chest cavity was completely FUBAR'ed. The heart and both lungs were mush. The deer ran about 20 yds and was DRT. .30 caliber rifle bullets moving at around 2800 fps will mess some stuff up! Don't matter very much what bullet design. I hear that Winchester Silver Tips (150 gr) in .308 are very good on pigs. I do know that it is an accurate bullet when fired from my FAL and from the semi-auto M14 I had a while back. Of course shot placement is still the key point. All this talk of deer and stuff makes me want to go hunting... I work too much, EMSflyer |
| For anyone that cares, I went to the range and shot Winchester 150gr Ballistic Tip, Remi Cor Lokt, Frderal Blue Box Soft Points from Wal Mart (cheap stuff mentioned earlier in this thread). The Winchester Ballistic Tips were the most accurate and the Remi Core Lokts and Federal Blue Box performed about the same. I'm sure all three would do the job on whitetail, but you can't beat the price of the Blue Box!! $12!! |
