Gun: RRA National Match, Wilde chamber (i.e. tight).  Gun's seen maybe 1000 rnds (maybe).

Ammunition: Ultramax remanufactured ammo.  62 gr FMJ, Lake City brass

Case head separation on round #6.   Round impacted where called (8 ring, what can I say, I hate standing).  No strange noise, no explosion, no bad impact.  Just a jam, because there's a case head sitting in my breach.  Pulled out the separated fore-body using a chamber brush.  Ammunition itself shoots well (all in the black in sitting and prone).

Primer was a "white" primer (as opposed to yellow/brass that sometimes Ultramax uses).

I suspect it was just a bad casing - since the brass appears to be military pick-ups that they then decrimp and reload.  So, Is this common?  This can't be good for the chamber.

I have shot about 1000 rounds of this stuff and I had one prob the case cracked and jammed in my AR, well not really jammed but I just had to pull it out and after that the rest was fine.. I have used there 55gr and 68gr match ammo also (the match ammo is very good)

I purchased 1000 rds of the 55gr from Cabelas back in April.

My Boys and I have gone through all but 100 rds. In the last 100 rounds though, I have had 2 of the complete case head seperations.

The second one was a pain in the butt because the case stuck in the chamber.

After the second one occurred, I inspected all of the remaining 100 rds and threw out 5 rds. After I shoot these up I will no longer buy any more..

One other thing that I noticed while inspecting the last 100 rds, there were varying degrees of bullet seating depths causing OAL's to vary, varying degrees of crimp, and runout. Not quality ammo, but then again I bought it for plinking.

Accuracy for these rounds was around 4" at 100 yds and after inspection of the remaining ones I have I can see why.

I haven't had the same problems with the limited number of Black Hills Blue box 68gr remans that I have shot. I would trust the BH stuff more, but then again you are taking your chances with the once fired military brass, especially if it came from being fired in a SAW!

Seems to be with Ultramax .223

sorry to hear about the poor accuracy of the 55 gr.  With the 62, I watched my friend shoot 99 out of 100 in the sitting position.

No worries and no damage.

It is not a problem with Ultramax it is  problem with brass that has been through an old SAW.

Machine guns are hard on brass.  We have saw this exact same thing in a post about Ultramax a couple months ago and with Black Hills a month before that.

The brass broke on extraction, when you fired it the brass was reinforced by the chamber so the shot would be perfect in every other way.  A broken shell extractor is a cheap accessory to have in your bag, especially since you use some remanufactured ammo.

I agree, there should be no damage and I wouldn't worry about it.  It's a bad piece of brass that seperated during firing.  You will see this from time to time when using reloads or once fired brass.

I was just inspecting some 40 cal brass from the range and found 2-40 cal s&w rounds from new winchester ranger ammo, that had the casings split from the case head to almost the case neck.  I'm sure who ever shot those didn't even notice.  I find cases that have splits in the case wall from time to time with some of my reloads and with new factory/surplus brass.

I see these threads here and there about Ultramax failures of one kind or another but I have shot Ultramax 55gr fmj and SP in my RRA since I got it about 18 months ago and have not had a single issue after well over 2k rounds. I don't know if it makes a difference that I buy mine from Dick's in the 130 SP and 150 fmj boxes. I haven't bought any since it went over $50/box but still shoot it regularly about 150rds/month.

There are enough problems reported with Ultramax ammo to keep me away from it.
