So in our local ad for today they were advertising XM193 .556. at 84$ www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0057969216663a&navCount=1&podId=0057969&parentId=cat20839&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20712-cat20839&catalogCode=XJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20839&hasJS=true When I got there they were substituting Remington 223 because they didn't get their full order in. www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0058333216499a&navCount=7&podId=0058333&parentId=cat20839&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20712-cat20726-cat20839&catalogCode=2UG&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20839&hasJS=true So... am I out of my mind thinking there is quite a difference here? Yet the sales guy tried to tell me it's exactly the damn same. ![]() Reguardless the Fudd's were there in force today... glad I left right away. |

Not the same: - The cartridge casings for both calibers have basically the same length and exterior dimensions. - The 5.56 round, loaded to Military Specification, typically has higher velocity and chamber pressure than the .223 Rem. - The 5.56 cartridge case may have thicker walls, and a thicker head, for extra strength. This better contains the higher chamber pressure. However, a thicker case reduces powder capacity, which is of concern to the reloader. - The 5.56mm and .223 Rem chambers are nearly identical. The difference is in the "Leade". Leade is defined as the portion of the barrel directly in front of the chamber where the rifling has been conically removed to allow room for the seated bullet. It is also more commonly known as the throat. Leade in a .223 Rem chamber is usually .085". In a 5.56mm chamber the leade is typically .162", or almost twice as much as in the 223 Rem chamber. - You can fire .223 Rem cartridges in 5.56mm chambers with this longer leade, but you will generally have a slight loss in accuracy and velocity over firing the .223 round in the chamber with the shorter leade it was designed for. - Problems may occur when firing the higher-pressure 5.56mm cartridge in a .223 chamber with its much shorter leade. It is generally known that shortening the leade can dramatically increase chamber pressure. In some cases, this higher pressure could result in primer pocket gas leaks, blown cartridge case heads and gun functioning issues. - The 5.56mm military cartridge fired in a .223 Rem chamber is considered by SAAMI (Small Arm and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) to be an unsafe ammunition combination. http://www.winchester.com/lawenforcement/news/newsview.aspx?storyid=11 |

Neither have I, lol. I try to stay away from Gander Mountain and Cabela's because of the idiot factor...and high prices. Even with shipping, ordering online or from a little shop usually nets the best prices on ammo. I'm in Wilmington Illinois by the way. Are you guys in the same general area? |
| precision cartridge in hobart is a big reloader outfit. they reload to .223 specs. 55 grain. 1,000 for $315 and 500 for $160 i was just wondering if anyone had ever used their ammo and the results. open till 5 during the week and until 3 on saturday. i just may have to take a ride and try some out for myself. |
| I cleaned out the Dundee store last week. 1600 rounds of Tac 193. Have 31 cents a round in it caused i used the gift card I received in the mail. I agree most Cabelas are a pita. I have gotten to know all the guys in the gun library and the firearms managers and things go a lot smoother now. They get so many tire kickers in the store it's amazing. |

I get my ammo from here: ammunitiontogo.com/ I live relatively close (1 hour drive) to a Cabelas but it is less expensive for me to buy Ammo from ATG. Cabelas price is higher plus you have to pay TAX. I shoot both the Remington he was trying to con you into buying as well as the XM193 and accuracy is terrible with the Remington (4" + groups @ 100 yds) compared to XM193 (2.1" groups) |
You didn't clean it out completely, my friend and I got the last four boxes at closing time yesterday. |
