Anyone care to share their experience with Australian surp 308 in a bolt, or AR platform?

Some of the best ammo around from what I can remember. People bought it up like crazy when it was available.

i bought 600 a while back and had a RRA LAR-8 on back order. after waiting for ever i cancelled the order and bought a Rem 700P. I'm hoping the ammo performs decent in this gun.

thanks

I had some. I was surprised how well it shot through my sniper-SORRY- precision rifle. Wish I had not blasted it all off like a dink

It ran real well in both my AR10 and PTR as well as my friends M1A and Cetme.

My opinion was that it was very good ammo and I should have bought a truckload

I bought a lot of it in bandoleers and in the 5 rnd. blister packs and it all is just fine.

I have shot it out of my 700 and it groups really well but not as good as the Port does.

some is boxer, some is berdan primed.

the best surplus IMO, edges out port if you have the boxer brass

The only, and I mean ONLY, downside to it is that I didn't buy a pallet of the stuff when it was available.

My M1as love it.

+1

My M1A loved it, I'm sorry I shot up as much as I did.  I wish I had bought a few more cases of it as well.

i was thinking about buying some 168g match grade or even Privi match but if this stuff is farily accurate then ill just stick with it. i guess 600 rds will last a while for a bolt action

I have 1120 rounds in the blister packs tucked away. I wish I bought more though.

Some were asking my why I was buying a few more crates at .17/rnd when SA/Port were .15....

Was there any difference between the blister packs and the stripper clips? Or was it all F4 Ball - I have some vague recollection it was claimed the blister packs were special in some way - but I cant recall.

I've never noticed significant difference between Hirt, Port, Aus (either) - but Ive a couple rifles that dont like SA.

Has there ever been a controlled comparison?

I am pretty sure that it was all F4 ball.  The only real difference that I recall was that the newer lots of the blister packs were boxer primed, I don't recall any of the bando ammo being boxer.

Port and Aussie - my favorite cheap ammo when you could buy them cheap.
Oh the days!!! Brings tears to my eyes thinking about them. *sniff*

I shot the best group I've ever shot in my life with Aussie .308 147 grain surplus.
5 rounds at 100 yards that you could cover with a nickel using a scoped M1A.

I bought over 3000 rounds of this ammo when it was cheap in 2004!

The bad news is that I only have 400 rounds left.

F4 ball ammo was the standard ammo that the Metropolitan Rifle Clubs would shoot in Australia. Some of this was done at up to 1,000 yards with bolt action Omark's and open sights. For a long time the Australian military did not have a designated sniper round. Regular F4 ball was good enough for the required accuracy.
Of course, YMMV with YOUR gun.
So yeah, I would say it was good stuff.

Not to shift the topic, but does anyone know how the Lithuanian from Wideners compares to Aussie?

I've sent over 6k of the Aussie down range, still have about 4k left...My LRB's and M1A's shoot it very accurate, its one of my prefered mil-surp 308

It is good stuff.
I liked buying it in the sealed .30 cal cans on stripper clips.
It was more reliable than the AR10 I used to shoot it in.

Aussie is good but Lith is better and reloadable

1992 or newer Australian is also reloadable, IIRC.
Also have to remember that different ammo works better in some guns. Yours likes Lith better. Someone else's might like SA or Port better.
All good stuff...

Does that mean that the old Aussie is Berdan primed?   A local pawn shop/gun dealer has some of what he says is Australian at what seems to be a really good price, $20/40 rounds.  But if it's not reloadable then I don't want it.   The headstamp looks like WA 70 7.62mm although it's hard to see due to the patina that's formed on the cases I saw.

An online list somewhere shows Aussie AFF '91 to be boxer, and all the AFF and MF from '90 and below as Berdan including one as old as '66.
Lastly, ADI '92 as boxer...no later dates listed.

I wish that I had bought 50,000 rds of it when it was readily available. I bought it for .18c per round delivered in 30 cal ammo cans. I only have about 3000 rds of it left

I wish that I had bought 50,000 rds of the BF Portugese also. I bought it for .135c per round delivered.I only have about 700 rds of that left
