Trying to figure out which way to store my every growing collection of ammo. Tell me how and why you store your ammo. I see many pictures of ammo stored in thier boxes and pictures with ammo store loose in cans. Thanks Peter |
| .50 cal cans with desiccant packs, sit down play the ammo Tetris game until you find how to make the most fit, toss in the desi pack and close the lid. Helps to store the cans in a cool dry place as well. All my ammo is either on stripper clips in bandoleers or in the original packaging. |
+1 only thing I would add is to figure out what ammo fits better in what size of ammo can. For example a "fat .50" can holds about 420 rounds for my .30-06 in the factory Federal boxes or 1k of WWB .45 (or 9mm) fits into a 5.56 can. Then you get to to figure out how to stack it with different size cans so that it doesnt fall and squish somebody

store your ammo off the floor, 'cuz most folks got concrete floors (holds water vapor/moisture directly storing cans onto cold, damp concrete will rust amo box at least, and may cause Internal condensation" at worst inside ammo box due to temperature/humidity differential between floor and box. (....did that just come outta me?) |

just bought a .50 cal box and it's the exact same size as my 5.56 box. all the .50 cal boxes i saw today were the same size as the 5.56 box i have. is there any reason for this?, i thought the .50 cal box was bigger? so i think i'll step up to a saw box. any thoughts? |
The Wide "saw" box can get pretty heavy, so don't even think about filling it with .22. I use the wide boxes for larger calibers. Cheaper than dirt has both sizes. and back to the subject of storage... Once you get get your ammo organized within your acceptable OCD level, close the lid and DO NOT OPEN IT UNTIL NEEDED. Constantly Fondling your ammo is not only bad for your mental health, but lowers the useful life of your desiccant packs. I have also heard of people waiting for a dry (non humid) day to close the lid. Don't know if it helps preserve the ammunition, but it may help you sleep just a little better. |
Before you spend any money check my thread about it here. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=10&f=17&t=613526 |

I ordered some of these to try out. Cardboard ammo boxes I like them a lot. They're cheap and easy to store and carry. I use them to story my plinking ammo in. Then I just print out labels in word and stick them to the top of the box, it makes it real easy to keep track of whats what. |

I bought some heavy shelving and keep a lot of stuff in its original case boxes or regular boxes if it did not come in a big case box. Wolf is still wrapped in its big plastic pack. While I have a lot of ammo cans I just don't see the need to mess with it. The ammo is in my living space that is somewhat heated and cooled so no problems with damp boxes or anything like that. If your ammo cans are painted they will do fine sitting on a concrete floor. Scratched paint the shows exposed metal will let rust get started. |

nope, never tried the bullfrog before. might give it a try. it's the VCI stuff (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor): BullFrog P.S. yup--storing ammo near the dehumidifier is good and helps control moisture, but, dang! that lil machine sure chews up the kilowatts $$$. |
