Okay I got a few question for all yall. I have an armalite A4 HBAR. About a month ago I ran 1 box of wolf 55grn hp (I think) though my rifle without a hitch. Well yesterday I picked up a few boxes and went to the range and it feed the 1st 3 rounds and from then on it had a very hard time feeding and when it did the case would jam in the chamber and I would have to pull really hard to eject the spent case. I had not cleaned the rifle from my last trip a few days ago (only had time to shoot one box of win silver tips). I also forgot my lube at home. Now my question is did I have the problems because if the ammo or my lack of cleaning (I normally very good about cleaning her)? Should I try and take the ammo back? What kind of ammo do yall use to just plink?

I had the same problem with wolf, you should be alright after a real good cleaning and lube. Also new rifles do not like wolf. The first couple times I tried shooting wolf I had failure to extracts and failure to cycles but the last time I went to the range I had no issues. I definitely would much rather be shooting brass but at the price right now I'm going to stick with wolf for awhile.

Give it a good cleaning, including the chamber, and a moderate coat of a good lube, such as CLP, and I bet you will have better luck.

And for just plinking, I use Wolf.  Now that brass cased .223 is about 30% higher than what I can get 30-06 for, I don't use it unless I'm shooting for groups.

If you don't clean after wolf, You can expect this.

Well to tell you the truth, I don't know enough about ARs. I do recall reading about simular issues regaurding other members and Wolf ammo. People mentioned something about the steal would expend under the heat making it hard to extract a spent casing. But there was one member that suggested something along the lines of, something is wrong with an AR if it has issues using Wolf...I'm not sure if it was laq or non laq coated casings. I'll try and find the thread and post a link to it later on tonight.

Anyhow, as for new ARs not liking Wolf...I've sent about 100rds down range with my new DPMS with zero issues.

IMHO......IF it ain't the WOLF's: physical dimensions, out of spec. load or powder (dirty burn)........I'd say: cleaning and lube (lack of), steel cases, lacquer coating, lack of taper to the cartridge.......all contribute to the "problem."

Hopefully, things will get better with more cleaning and lube, or with more use (WOLF ammo or other brand). YMWV.

Course......you shouldn't/wouldn't have had these problems with spec. bass cased USGI ammo.......RIGHT?!?  Well, may be, maybe not.........but, IMHO you should at least clean and lube your weapon, no matter what ammo you use.

Aloha, Mark

If you only shot one box it shouldn't be dirty enough to give you problems.  Most likely lube issues.  Get it wet and try it again, then report back.

I dont believe this one, I have yet to fire anything but Wolf from my AR (about 500 rds so far) with no issues whatever.

Ya got it backwards.  The steel case doesn't expand in the chamber like brass does allowing carbon to build up inside the chamber which can affect extraction when using brass following Wolf.  With brass cases the expansion of the case seals things better keeping some gunk out of the chamber.  There was a member here that did alot of testing to figure out the problem.

kwrang.. how do you figure steel doesn't expand? What's with all of the stuck cases? hah.

Wolf is junk ammo, it really is.. Two of my three ARs shoot it fine, I've had a few stuck cases a few shortstrokes out of maybe 2500 rounds? or more...  My del-ton short strokes on it one every 50 rounds or so, which is really irritating.  7 or 800 rounds or so of brass stuff and no problems in the del-ton.  It's only the wolf!

It's this simple, if your AR runs it good, plink with that all day every day and save money.  If it doesn't, oh well.

Take a look at this board say 5 years ago, Wolf was "substandard and dangerous, only a cheap idiot would shoot it" and now it's almost kool aid.  Can't say I agree with 5 years ago or todays flavor but it IS junk ammo.

Allright, a metalurgist.

So, between medium carbon steel and brass, which of the two is the more malleable?

I said the steel case does not expand in the chamber LIKE brass does.  Because of this there is more chamber fouling which leads to a buildup that closes up tolerances in the chamber, before ya know it something sticks.  Of course I have yet to have this problem with the wolf.  Its been discussed in depth within the last month.  The push to find an answer was folks having alot of trouble switching to brass cased ammo after shooting wolf and having the case sieze in the chamber.  Buildup while using the steel, then a brass case that expands MORE than steel does and it gets wedged.

As for comparing 5 years ago to today, I wish I could find ammo for the old prices.  Till something changes I'll shoot wolf, why spend twice as much to plink at the range?  I'm willing to bet the old views were a bit off center due to relatively cheap good ammo allowing folks to turn up their noses at the russian stuff.  Now a days the view is off center the other direction since its the only decent affordable ammo out there.

Hah right back atcha.

I'm with KWRANGIN. I've got no problems shooting Wolf out of ANY of my Ar's. I've even shot some brass cased ammo right after shooting the steel Wolf and had zero problems with my Del-Ton. Some rifles like it,some are finicky with it. They should ALL be able to shoot it,in my opinion. If they can't,there's something wrong with the rifle.

Yah i think it was just the lack of lube.... it did run a bunch off other types of ammo (any time I see something new i give it a shot:), with out so much as a hiccup. in fact in about 1300 or so rounds I have only had 2 glitches (excluding said wolf).
