Guys,

I am in the process of ordering ammunition, and I received a quote for Hornady 9754EL 55 grain "Steel Case" ammo. It is cheaper than the Remington quote I received, and the delivery date for the Hornady is much sooner. The question is are there any issues with this steel case ammunition? Does it wear on the weapons more than standard brass ammo (extractor etc.)? Any advice is appreciated ......

If it won't fire Wolf (or other steel case ammo) sell it.  Probably a little harder on the extractor, but nothing proven.  Good luck

Never fired any Hornady steel cased but I have fired thousands of rounds of Wolf with no problems at all

Since when has Hornady made steel cased ammo?  First I have heard of it!

Not sure, it was news to me also. I think it may be LE/Mil restricted, but I'm not sure. The web site says it's "zinc coated" but from what I understand it is now actually lacquer coated. Here is a link:

Like many here, I've shot a lot of Wolf ammo (steel case) and never had any problems.

I have over 5,500 rounds of Wolf steel case ammo through a Ruger Mini-30 with no problems other than Wolf quality control. I have found their .223 steel case ammo to have better quality control than the 7.62x39 (some hangfires and duds), never having a hangfire or dud in the .223. I have about 1,200 of this stuff through each of my two Mini-14s. I do not use steel case ammo in my AR15s however.

I would imagine the 55gr stuff is similar to their 75gr offering.

Steel cased ammo is fine and the only one's I see complain are those with AR's that refuse to run Wolf reliably.  With the money you save on wolf over the life of the rifle you can afford to buy an entirely new rifle.

Incorrect.

Blackened nickel-plated brass to my knowledge.

We got some of it here due to a mix up and it is what it is, practice ammo.  Compared to wolf it is cleaner but we have had a few hard primers.  Since several rifles failed to ignite primers on first strikes, I would say the primers are the culprit as these same rifles have never had problems with other ammo.

What I want to know is, where can I buy this Hornady training ammo, and how much is it? I have never seen it or heard of it before. I can't seem to find any for sale anywhere.

Here is my take.

The zinc coated ammo is good.

I have both zinc and some of the later lacquer coated stuff.

The lacquer coated stuff sucks and might as well be Wolf.  The smell of fired laquer coated ammo is the same as Wolf.  The zinc coated ammo did not have that smell.

The lacquer coated ammo gave me feeding problems.

The zinc coated burned clean.  Lacquer coated was dirty.

Oh,yeah.  I also had some hard primers and the rounds did not fire.

I was told by Hornady that the zinc stuff was a Russian steel case loaded with Hornady powder and components.

I would bet that the lacquer stuff is all Russian, except perhaps for the bullet.

The lacquer stuff also seemed less accurate.

I am selling my lacquer coated lot and keeping the zinc coated lot.

What does that say?

I had a steel case round blow up my suppressor but that was the bullet, not the case.  Still, I wont do anymore steel cased ammo through a suppressor.

What then? I mean, you can't just chuck it in the trash can right? Do you mail them the destroyed can and request a permit or whatnot for a new one?

yes, I know what the ad says.  I am telling you it smells like Russky ammo.  The zinc version does not.

Do you have this ammo?
