not sure this is for the correct forum, but i'll ask any way. I plan on using my ar-15 for deer hunting tommorow and am nervous about the sight differential from the barrel to the carry handle sight. {oly. arms, plinker +}. i was told that we would be 10-15 yards from the deer. any thing to worry about, or should i aim a little high? tkx! hinking.gif

10-15 yards mount your bayonet.

aim 2 inches high
and then charge and use your bayonet.

the kill zone on a deer is large enough that there shouldn't be an issue.  Someone might point out that the heart is a small target, but since you can't be certain where the heart is from different angles the kill area is heart and lung area combined.

Two inches high will work great. What load are you using?

if your deer are bigger than 50lbs you should use a better bullet. winchester 64grn PP or anything loaded with 60grn partitions would be best.

Don't worry.  Just shoot him twice in the chest and you'll be fine.

No 223 will work "great".  A 12 gauge slug, now that is an example of something that will work great.

What you have is "good enough" Just do a good job on placing the shot.  perhaps use a google photo search to get more familiar with the killzone.

most like to make a humane kill. i am sure you can afford $20 for a box of good hunting ammo. 223 is on the small side even with the best bullets for deer. the load you stated was made for coyote sized game. from what i have heard deer are big up there. use the right tool for the job.

Damn your buddy's must be pretty sure , 10 to 15 yards ..that's close.

What are you hunting out of ?  When I set up in my stands I always make sure I have a comfortable stand , I look for all the possible locations the deer will appear from and , then make sure all my shooting lanes are cleared.

then they surprise me and come from behind me

really the close range will make the bullet perform worse. high impact velocity means less penitration with these light varmint bullets...

Corbon DPX in 62gr would be the best load I can think of. 14-18" penetration and .40-.45 expansion in gel. Dunno what it would do in a deer. It would hold togather and GREATLY reduce chances of a lack of penetration issue though.

Yesterday, 50 yds 55gr hornady spire (varmit bullet), 24.4gr H335, CCI 400primer. 4 inches behind the ear. 11point DRT.  Dropped like a stone and never moved.

It is all about shot placement. If you aren't sure you can put it where you want it.....get a bigger weapon. Otherwise you end up with wounded/lost game.

On Minnesota sized deer?  Good luck with that one...

You'd better shoot it in the ear.  At 10-15 yards, that bullet will blow up / come apart right under the hide, leaving a nasty but superficial wound.  It will 'maybe' take out one lung and undoubtedly will leave a long, long, blood trail.  You'll probably find it still alive and jump it from it's bed when and if you ever find it.  Then you'll have a nice white rump to shoot at.

You'd be better off with an AK, an SKS, or at that distance even buckshot (which sucks) would work better.

I hate deer hunters that shoot from a stand.  That is not real hunting.  You should track your prey and then get em.    They probally feed the deer corn and crap during the summer.

at 10-15 yards he can put the bullet precisely into the heart/lung the extreme amount of bullet fragmentation plus the high amount of velocity will cary the fragments through both lungs.  It should make a real mess of things. Believe me I have shot deer at point blank with a 223 and I have shot many deer at close range with 22-250 with the same velocity even 40 grn HPs out of the 22-250 were quite deadly provided enough velocity.

While I personally am not much on dog hunting for anything other than water fowl.  I have been on hog hunts with dogs that I enjoyed.  Hunting game with dogs is a tradition almost as old as hunting itself.  Its something that should be protected and allowed to continue.  There is a certain magical ring to the bawl of a hound on trail.  It is not unethical or unsporting it is only different and to be honest from what I have seen I believe dog hunters actually have less sucess than a solitary hunter.

Are you going to  BUSHWACK this deer??  ( tree stand)

I dont belive in BUSHWACKING DEER myself,

I like to STALK !  add to the HUNT

I  try to shoot at the heart!

A 223/5.56mm can KILL A DEER Very well AT the right range.

Ive seen A Large White Tail deer drop at 75yards with a 22 magnum

223 WIN 64gr PP would be a good load and has taken many a DEER

"Bushwhacking" a deer gives you a better chance to study and age the deer leading to a better mangment plan and a much better herd. If you ever hunted south Texas you would understand stalking is not always an option on some land.

The radical intolerance of different hunting techniques displayed in some posts here is f***ing stupid.  “I ‘hate’ you because you hunt using method ‘X’”.  Ridiculous.  F***ing grow up and mind your own business.  It is this type of intolerance, coupled with healthy helpings of stupidity, apathy, and greed, that is responsible for the trashing of our constitution.  This reminds me of the failed dove hunting initiative in MI.  Though dove hunting does not interest me, I recognize that what I like and dislike is irrelevant to just about everyone but myself.  The hunters that opposed dove hunting are stupid, plain and simple.  Talk about bringing rope to your own hanging.

Back on topic, if you are going to hunt using .223 please use a heavier bullet and as always, pay attention to shot placement.

Make sure it is legal to hunt with a .223 as well.... I know it is NOT legal to hunt with a 223 in CT. Be sure to check your local laws! As for me, I strongly agree with my 30.06, I would rather hunt with a bigger round.... Dont get me wrong, I love my black rifles, but they dont appeal to me for deer. To each their own, I'm not saying they are good or bad for deer, just not my choice.

You are all weaksauce. A real man stalks the deer. Gets close to it. In it's native tongue he convinces it to surrender. Then with one fell swoop he slits it's throat with a knife having a blade no longer than 2-1/4 inches.

ETA: I still maintain that 62gr Corbon DPX is the way to go.

I think you should all try catching them with a trip net like in Predator.  That's the manliest way to do it, other than exploding spears.  Just shoot it in the head and be done with it.
