| What is the best way to label a GI surplus metal ammo boxes semi-permanently? |
This is what I currently use, but at $10 a cartridge, alternatives/options are nice. |
+1 works great. One cartridge should last you 20-30 cans depending on how much you want to print and the size of the font. |
That does look really good though. |

I gotta learn to host pics. I tried them all and nothing comes close to shipping tags. I use 4 3/4 X 3 3/8 W/reinforced holes. Just set up your computer to print this size lable and your home free. I attach the string to the ammo can handle anchors and the tag lies flat on the side of the can. Very clear to read and very strong. A finished tag looks like this. On the tags the printing is centered XM 193 Lot # 98 2004 10 Round Clips In Bandos 840 Cartridges |
Heck yeah it does Im going to the arts and crafts store right now |
If you have five cans of ammo and they are all the same brand and year I guess that's OK. When you have 5.56 in XM193, M855, Radway, Quat, S&B, Winchester Q3131 & Q3131A, Prvi Partisan, SA etc it's not enough to just have 5.56 stenciled on the can. If your going to be serious about ammo storage everything you need to know has to be on the tag so you don't have to open cans once you seal them. Many times I have seen a post that contains questionable lot #s and I really don't want to open my cans to check. I just check the tags. I have found that any info taped, stuck, etc on the cans loosens up in time. Shipping tags are the cheapest, clearest, easiest way to identify the contents of your stash. Just my .02 |
I like this idea, too. Only fear is yanking the tag off (I'm a klutz). P.S. You go to photobucket.com/ or something like that, upload your pictures from your computer and then use the third black box under where you type to enter the url of your pictures. When you hold your cursor over the appropriate button, it says "Add Image". Now go nuts 'cause we all love pictures. |
Don't worry about yanking the tag off. I can just about pick up the can by the tag. You won't be pulling off the tag accidentally. I have to get my son to help me out with posting the pix. If anyone wants to see what this set up looks like I will email you a pic. Ya can even post it for me if you like. Mike |
Damn I'm jealous!

Thats three years ago before I started building up my stash. Can't fit it all in one pic now. I really have the sickness. BAD |

P-Touch here, along with something I thought was interesting. For a while all my credit card shills came with credit card-shaped magnets. Bingo! I got free magnets for labels. So I have stuff like current levels on the magnets, and a basic "5.56mm NATO" P-Touch label on the can. I have the original, "sample" cartridge in my PT-1950, and I've made LOTS of labels and still have tape left. Sure the cartridges are kind of pricey, but for labeling ANYTHING, this system is THE way to go. |
Looks like 31000+ roounds! My Buddy |
Now that is beautiful!!! Clean up the family's crap surrounding the ammo, take another picture, post it and I will make it my desktop wallpaper. Can't build up your inventory too much, you'll run out of room in R.I. Has R.I. gone to a state-wide WiFi yet? |
I try to keep the crap under control but it's a storage room and the gun room is full. Every time my wife askes me to move the ammo I make a excuse. What am I going to say, the gun room is full and I need the space for overflow. |
Even better than a photo to use as my wallpaper...I'll store the overflow at my place! |
|
I take the sticky Priority mailing labels I screw up on and put them in the box I save my Postal receipts in. When I need to label a new can, I cut off a little piece (3/4" x 2") and write all the info in ink. I then put that little sticker on the handle. Its absolutely free, trouble free, and can be replaced or stuck over anytime easily. I like that tag thing a lot, but its way too OCD for me. |
