I attended a local auction today and picked up some 5.56 ammo. I got 1900 rounds of Q3131 for $455 and 900 rounds of PMC for $190. The Q3131 was head stamped WCC 89 and the PMC was PS 81. I guess it is older stuff but it still looks good and the boxes looked good. I got a full unopened case of the Q3131. A friend and I split it. Do you guys think we did OK on the price? The average was about .23 cents per round.

BTW, what is the deal with 5mm rim fire ammo? I had never heard of it and they had 23 boxes of it and it brought $60 a box! The guy that bid it off took all 23 boxes!

5mm was a Remington chambering. I had an acquaintance that owned a 5mm rifle, but never shot it due to the cost of the ammo.

Here's a link that discusses some of the history of the 5mm.

Wasn't there a bad lot of Q3131 with an 89 headstamp?

I have a 5mm Remington rifle....

I can't find ammo for it anywhere.  If I do, it's well over $50 per box.  That's a buck a round.

I think that is quite expensive for an auction. The ammo is almost 20 years old now.
I know ammo lasts a long time, but still. If it were Q3131A, I think it would have been a good deal. I have not heard any specific dates for bad batches of Q3131, but there seems to be a few out there.

Theres a thread somwehere on here about specific bad lots of Q3131... If I recall correctly the bad lots begin with a P... and I think they have to do with 1999 production. I know there's a Maryland AR15 Shooters site that gives the same info.

Zhukov, thanks for the link. It was very informative. They sold a 5mm rifle too. The guy that bought it bought the ammo.

VAPORTRAIL, I have no idea. The lot numbers on the Q3131 are CH32 and CL91. Does anyone else know?

ar15gnocchi, I was willing to go up to .25 cents per round. I know that is expensive to a lot of you but I can't seem to find brass cased 5.56 any cheaper. XM193 is about .33 cents locally after sales tax. I just got my first AR in December and I am trying to stock up a little.

These days.......

$.25 a round is my limit....$.23 is not a bad deal in my opinion.

Not a highjack of the thread, but I just bought some .308 at bargain prices.  A local newspaper had an ad I answered.  I got 17 boxes of Federal GMM and Black Hills 168 grain match *Plus* 300 rounds of Aussie surplus-including a box of 4 bandoliers with the box still sealed from the armory.  There were also five boxes of soft point hunting ammo.  That's 740 rounds of prime stuff for $150-less then $0.21 a round!!  With the 650 rounds of Hirtenberger I recently aquired, I'm a happy boy!
