what does "cheap" practice ammo in 6.8 go for per 1000?

what about the top of the line stuff, like Hornady TAP?

Hornady 6.8 TAP in BTHP or V-Max is $130 per 200 rounds, shipped.  SSA 115 Gr. FMJ is around $11.00 per 20 rounds, but that does not include shipping.  I like the Hornady 110 Gr. V-Max the best.

so there's no such thing as inexpensive practice ammo?

6.8 SPC is still a fairly low-volume production cartridge.  There's no such thing as surplus or imported ammo for it; it's all new, US-production ammo.

Keep in mind that .223/5.56mm is the most common rifle caliber in the Western world, is produced by virtually every ammo factory in the West, and production of it is several billion rounds per year.  Thus, it can be had very, very cheap, due to huge economies of scale and massive competition.

You simply can't compare that to any non-military cartridge.  Have you priced out new, US-production costs for .308 or .30-06 ammo?  I'm not talking about Winchester or Lake City Grade 2 military ammo, but commercial ammo.  It's spendy, when you're used to .223.

Good point.  .223/5.56 is the only rifle caliber I've ever bought, so I guess I'm spoiled by the cheap ammo.  Although even that's starting to not feel so cheap any more.
