I'd bought 100 rds of Maine Cartridge Co's "SS109" reloaded ammo some time ago and finally got around to shooting it.  It seemed to function well in my 16" BM.  Accuracy was poor,  but I wasn't sure because I was shooting off hand and well,  it is conceivable that I was just missing.  I collected my brass after firing 25 rounds and discovered that 19 of them had split necks.

I just read the poll archive in which the majority have a positive view of MCC's ammo,  so it would appear that my experience is very unusual.   I feel very lucky that nothing bad happened to me or my rifle and obviously will destroy the remaining 75 rounds.  While a split neck may be somewhat common for reloads,  19 out of 25 seems extraordinary and I wish I had some understanding of why this happened,  at least for my own curiousity.

One of the members of the forum had a kB with MCC some time back which ruined an SPR upper he had.

MCC was a rather shady company in terms of quality back when I got into the AR game around 1998-1999, then things quieted down for a time until recently.

I'd be pretty face shy around MCC ammo.

So how old is this stuff? Is it stuff from 6 or 8 years ago or 1 or 2 year old stuff?

It's ranked 24th out of 26 ammo reviews; I wouldn't call that good ammo - especially as one person has already reported a KB, and several other reports of serious manufacturing defects available.

The ammo in question was bought at least 4 years ago.  Its labeled .223 Remington   62GR. M855/SS109 Military M5.  Meanwhile I have examined the remaining cartridges and found that virtually every one of them has a hairline crack in the case neck.  Its not something you'd easily see just handling the rounds or loading them into a magazine,  but with a close look under good light there's no mistaking it.  Furthermore the bullets are basically loose in the cases.  What it comes down to is I should have known better and should have looked closer at this stuff (or anything else) before feeding it to my pet.  I wish the remanu companies (besides BlackHills) would come up with a better product.   Todays conversation at the gun store:
customer: "I see you got some XM193 in stock"
owner:      "Yup"
customer: "Wow $7 a box!?"
owner:      "Yup"
customer: "Any case discount?"
owner:      "I haven't got a case"
customer:  "Doh!
