will soft point ammo be unreliable in an ar?  I have heard something about the tips deforming after a few chamberings, but I plan on chambering each round just once

I started using the Winchester 64gr SP in my M4 carbine for my (then) 8 year old while deer hunting. Worked just fine - I didn't cycle a bunch of ammo though so the sample size was small.

Tips will get banged up after multiple chamberings, but IMO good rounds for hunting (Win 64grn PP or PP+). I have used the older PP for years, (custom reloads for better than factory offering accuracy).

Best used in rifles with "feed-ramped" (M4) type uppers to reduce the possibility of set-back.

Haven't tryed soft points, but found the Remington 55 gr HP, available in bulk from Midway, feeds fine in my Varminter and M4. My Bushmaster Carbon 15 will only feed about four out of five. They also do the job on p-dogs.
