| Guys what are the regs on shipping ammo say from me to a friend in GA. Does it have to go say UPS ground and do they charge a hazardous materials charge? |
I believe you just have to mark the box ORM-D. There shouldn't be a HAZMAT fee for complete cartridges. -------------------------------- Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Part 173 173.63 Packaging exceptions (b) Cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices. (1) Cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices (which are used to project fastening devices) which have been classed as a Division 1.4S explosive may be reclassed, offered for transportation, and transported as ORM-D material when packaged in accordance with paragraph (b)(2) of this section; such transportation is excepted from the requirements of subparts E (Labeling) and F (Placarding) of part 172 of this subchapter. Cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices that may be shipped as ORM-D material is limited to: (i) Ammunition for rifle, pistol or shotgun; (ii) Ammunition with inert projectiles or blank ammunition; (iii) Ammunition having no tear gas, incendiary, or detonating explosive projectiles; (iv) Ammunition not exceeding 12.7 mm (50 caliber or 0.5 inch) for rifle or pistol, cartridges or 8 gauge for shotshells; and (v) Cartridges, power devices which are used to project fastening devices. (2) Packaging for cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices as ORM-D material must be as follows: (i) Ammunition must be packed in inside boxes, or in partitions which fit snugly in the outside packaging, or in metal clips; (ii) Primers must be protected from accidental initiation; (iii) Inside boxes, partitions or metal clips must be packed in securely-closed strong outside packagings; (iv) Maximum gross weight is limited to 30 kg (66 pounds) per package; and (v) Cartridges, power devices which are used to project fastening devices and 22 caliber rim-fire cartridges may be packaged loose in strong outside packagings. (c)–(e) [Reserved] |
| No Hazmat but an ADULT SIGNATURE REQUIRED fee. I've even had UPS refuse to ship ammo unless it is shipped by a dealer who has to have an open account with UPS, therefore another charge for the dealer to ship it. It has become a real pain in the arse at my nearest UPS facility. |
It can be a hassle taking the ammo to UPS because the employees think that it is haz mat or requires the Adult Signature. The only thing that has to be done is the ORMD. Also the shipping box has to be in good condition. I print my own labels off the UPS web site and hand the boxes over to the first random brown truck that I see. I confess that I do not mark my plain brown boxes. UPS drivers do not care on way or the other. |

My successful experiences: Take it to an actual UPS service center- not one of those Quik Pack-type places. Pack it in a new clean cardboard box. Label it with ORMD on the outside with a rectangle around it- with the words Cartridges, Consumer Quantity underneath the rectangle. Pay the shipping fee and you're done. The bottom line is you are shipping a Consumer Quantity so there should be no hassle. Do not use the words 'ammo'or 'bullets'or 'ammunition'. I have never had to pay an 'adult signature' fee. 4073 |
I had a slight issue - the local guys just called the shipping regs people and got clarification of how it was supposed to be shipped. They told me, ground only, put "small arms cartridges" in a triangle on it... |
I think they made a mistake in giving you the information. The full requirement is that it is to be located in a rectangle, not a triangle. The full requirement is ORM-D in large letters. Small Arms Ammunition, written above ORM-D, in smaller letters, and it all enclosed in a rectangle. Google ORM-D Labels and take a look at one. The label can be done by hand, and although pencil/pen is acceptable, UPS prefers using a black marker so that it stands out and that it be put on 2-3 sides of the package. ETA: Oh, and ship it from home if you can. Then you don't have to worry about the counter people. I just print the shipping label on line and arrange for a pickup at the same time. The driver for my area just stops and takes it. No questions..no issues..no hastles (except when he complains about the weiight and accuses me of purposely trying to injure him). |
