What is the difference, main use of each, specs etc.

Thanks

M-xxx is front line ammo and has passed all QC inspections, XM-xxx is ammo that has fallen out of one of the QC inspections mostly cosmetic reasons, and XM-xxxPD is ammo that has fallen out of two QC inspections and is most likely dented slightly or blemished. If you do a search you will probably get a better answer.

I have never heard of XM195.  I dont think it exists. Isnt M195 the tracer desigantion?

M855 is current military issue ammo, 62 grain with a steel penetrator tip. Tip rips off after passing through a barrier, reducing it mass and pentration. Its low velocity compared to M193 means less penetration on hard barriers at under 200 yards. This makes it a poor round for use as a barrier round.  It relys on fragmentation for terminal effectiveness.  Its reduced velocity and thick jacket give it extremely short range of maximum effectiveness.  It is also not very accurate.  Really not a good round for a carbine at all. It was designed to to one thing.  Be used in a SAW and penetrate steel helmets at 800m.  M193 cannot do this.

M193 was milspec back when 1/12 was the military twist (think Vietnam era).  It is similar to M855 but has no penetrator and is 55 grain.  Its lighter weight and greater velocity mean better penetration for hard targets at close range and a greater distance before the rounds velocity decreases to the point it will no longer fragment in tissue. It is also less expensive than M855. Better ammo for your carbine but it is not the best for barriers, not the best for terminal effectiveness, not the best for accuracy, not the least expensive, etc.  Its good all around ammo but it is pretty much average in all categories.
