| So most people use mil surp ammo for SHTF/ rainy day applications because it keeps forever, but what about Winchester White Box? Since it doesnt have sealants, what kind of storage life (in average household conditions) could be expected of it to remain reliable? |

Sealant has almost nothing to do with the potential storage lifespan of ammo. Stored ammo will last longer than you will as long as you keep it dry and cool. Surplus USGI ammo cans are the preferred storage container, as they are airtight (as long as the gasket is in good shape) and waterproof. People keep Mil-Spec loads, such as M193 and M855, for "duty" or defensive use because they are hot loads (i.e., high pressure/velocity) that will give them maximum fragmentation range for the bullet type they are using, and because the sealant will increase the chance that the round will work even if the ammo gets dunked in water. Also, this ammo is usually reasonably cost-effective to buy in bulk. Please read the www.ammo-oracle.com and the other tacked threads. -Troy |
| I dunno if it's really sealed or not, but my accidental expariment: Went shooting in a downpour, ammo can of WWB accumilated some water. Didn't drain all water before storing can for 2 weeks, ammo from 1/2 " above bottom of can looked normal, botom stuff looked like rusted wolf ( ammo can rsted). Seperated rusty looking ammo, and test fired through baby eagle. No squibs, although some rounds had an obvious underpowered feeeling. |
