Hey guys I wanted to know how many rounds you end up going through each range session. I usually go to an indoor 25 yard range and shoot on average 30 rounds through my M4 clone and about 40-50 rounds out of my HK USP .40 S&W. Thats about $16 spent for nothing. Now recently I have started going to some property that my mother owns. It has always been a hassle because whenever we shoot there, the police or sherieff has to come by and pay us a visit. It seems when I am outdoors I burn through ammo REALLY FAST. I mean REALLY FAST. When I go to the indoor range I spend alot of time talking and bsing. I am always concerned about ammo consumption because my only source of income is $25 a week mowing our yard, or do odd and end chores around the house for mom or dad. When I visited my informal range I shot about 180 rounds of XM193 and 100 rounds of .40 S&W in a matter of perhaps 1 hour. At the indoor range we are there for perhaps 3-4 hours and shoot 30/50. Thats 80 rounds in 4 hours, compared to 280 in 1. It sure is fun to do mag dumps on the move and shoot at empty pop cans filled with water, milk jugs with water, and jello filled beer bottles that dad got finished with. The only problem is the police and ammo usage. So I am wondering, how many rounds do you guys shoot in an average range session? How often do you go? I go once a week and shoot 30/50 rounds. But I sure do want to take alot more trips to my informal outdoor range  .

What can the police do about it? You are on your moms property...is it the noise? To answer the question, I used to shoot 300-450 rounds at a range session...then I ran out of ammo and money to buy more ammo...stupid college. |

I go through about 50 rounds (a box) of Black Hills Blue Box per range visit. When I'm out, I'm out. It's all I'm budgeted for right now. I'm agreeing with terrafirma on this one... stupid college. I go about once a week, so about 15 bucks per shooting day. (If I'm alone.) |

Almost all of my shooting lately has been in matches or classes, so that's not going to help. Usually when I go to shoot my AR specifically, I will load six 30rd magazines (28 each) and when I am done with those, I am done. On rare occasions I might budget about twice that much, but it's because I am doing more than one thing (like shooting at 240 yards, but also doing some practice at close range on multiple targets, etc.). |
Actually, that's money very well spent. Just remember that when you're going to the range, you are also perfecting the art of shooting....a skill that may someday save your life. And of course the more you shoot, the better you hone those skills. In the future, think of it in these terms and you won't feel it's just wasted $$$ spent on blasting ammo. And if you can manage to use some realistic elements in your training, that's even better. |

Indoors: 200 rds. I usually just shoot 5rd dots for accuracy and reload practice. If the range is empty I'll add a retention draw. They have a 1 second rule. Outdoors: Depends on the weather. One day I went through 500 rounds of 9mm, 100 5.56mm and 120 12ga birdshot. |

A short indoor pistol session is usually a bit less than an hour. In that time I'll shoot around 300-400 rounds. Sometimes more, sometimes less. It just depends on what drills I'm running that day. Things are kind of the same for rifle. If I'm trying to shoot small groups with different loads, I could be at the range for hours and shoot less than 100 rounds. If I'm working on CQB type drills, I can go through 500-1000 rounds in a few hours. It really just depends. My schedule has been crazy lately. I like to shoot once every week, but lately it has averaged out to be more like twice a month. |
And it's better than money wasted on beer.
