I bet this subject has been beated to death, but give a newbie some leeway.

I have a Colt AR-15 Sportster 16" with the following inscription on the
barrel:
C  MP  5.56 NATO  1/7

What would be the best ammo for SHTF & long term storage?

I am not talking about a $500 a case brand, but neither do I want the cheap kind.

Not really understanding your question.  Ammo for SHTF is ANY ammo you can count on to go BOOM and hit its target.  Ammo long term storage??  How long is long term?  I have 7.62 x 54R thats over 50 years old and still works.

XM193 (the boxed stuff) At least 1K per rifle.
Read the Ammo Oracle, it should answer most of your questions.

Please read the tacked threads.  Your rifle is capable of shooting virtually any .223 or 5.56 loads there are, so the decision will be based on what you want to DO with the rifle.  Again, read the tacked threads.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Sorry I couldn't respond sooner.

I guess my question would be ammo geared for self defense more than a storage issue.

So if you could only choose 1 kind for self defense for a Colt 16"  1/7 Twist, which ammo would you go for.

Thanks.

+1 on boxed XM193 and the Ammo Oracle.  Also check out brillo's Ammo Price List, I check it several times a week!

HA!

I was pissed that people never read The Oracle, so I was putting a paper together, and was gonna ask to have it tacked.

Then I came to my senses, and realized I was being an ass, and stopped my paper.

Then I stumbled on this thread.

Anyway, here's what I had so far...it hopefully answers your question.

www.ammo-oracle.com/body.htm#twists

M16A2s, A3s, A4s, M4s and M4A1s all have a 1:7 twist and can stabilize both M855 and M193.

M855: 62gr FMJBT Ball, green-painted tip.

This cartridge is intended for use against personnel, unarmored and light armored targets from 5.56×45mm weapons with a 1-in-10-inch (1:10) or faster rifling twist (Machine guns: M249 Minimi; Rifles: M16A2 and other compatible systems). The M855 cartridge is based on the FN-designed SS-109 bullet, and has a gilding metal-jacketed, lead alloy core bullet with a steel penetrator. The primer and case are waterproof. It was adopted by NATO in 1980 as the standard small arms ammunition for NATO forces. Its ballistic coefficient is typically 304.

M193: 55gr FMJBT Ball, plain tip.

This cartridge is intended for use against personnel and unarmored targets from 5.56×45mm weapons with a 1-in-12-inch (1:12) or faster rifling twist rate (M16 family rifles and other compatible systems). Its ballistic coefficient is typically .243

If you are considering ammo for long term storage, try the Radway Green 62 Gr. from AIM.  Very good ammo, on strippers, in bandoleers, packed in ammo cans ready to store.  There was also some Hirtenberger 62 Gr. on strippers in bandoleers in cans.  This is good ammo to store also.

Most any ammo is worthy of storage if stored correctly.  I try to find ammo that has sealed primers and bullets.  As said previously, when the chips are down you will shoot anything you can get your hands on.

Although I'm not a fan of Wolf ammo, I'd think it would be a good storage ammo but like all ammo, one must keep it absolutely dry.

You really should read the tacked threads on this topic.  Most folks that post a lot on this site take the ammo oracle as being gosple.  It has a wealth of good infomation but it is not the last word on a lot of points.  As with anything you read on the internet, beware and take with a grain of salt.

I'll probably get flamed for saying these things but you are new to this site and need to start with the proper mindset.  Just be open minded about what you read here, there is a lot of hot tips and hot air.

My two cents.
