What is subsonic ammo?  Why and when should I use it?  Specifically for a 5.56 and 9mm carbine AR.  Thanks.

If you don't know, you don't need it.

Subsonic is ammo that moves at less than 1130 ft/sec (770 mph or so depending on temp and alt) and it is used most commonly in rifles or pistols equipped w/ a suppressor.

What is the advantage? Does it help with noise suppression?

Duuhhhhh, yes!

Firing mil-spec velocity rounds out of a suppressed weapon, while making it quieter on the shooting end DOES NOT stop the "sonic-crack" of the bullet (223 or 9mm) as it passes the speed of sound.

Firing "subsonic" ammo in a suppressed weapon the most you'll probably hear is the action cycling.

btw - do your parents know your messin w/ their computer?????

How does this effect ballistics and penetration of round?

Your hurtfull sarcasm cuts like a knife

Sorry but your questions are quite revealing..............

Speaking strictly 9mm now: most of the sub-sonics I'm familar w/ are on the heavier side and within "it's" effective range I'd say it will not be as adversely affected as a sub-sonic 223/5.56mm round.

For the 223/5.56mm side, this will be determined by the weight of the round you are using and whether or not that round relys on fragmentation or weight retention to do it's job.

I'd highly recommend you go to the "AMMUNITION" forum and read the Ammo Faq tacked there: www.ammo-oracle.com (here ya go) as it will fill in some the gaps in your understanding of what I'm referring to here.

Lite weight M193 rounds "fragment", heavier Mod262 77grn SMKs and such rely more on weight and require a faster twist rate (1/7 normally).

Sorry I cannot be more helpful, but "hush-puppies" are not something I'm an expert on, perhaps the M16 FA guys can lend a hand and help with more specific data.........

Thanks for the info.  I have read the entire ammo oracle, but I guess I should read it again, and this time I will take some notes.

Fizassist, why did you edit your post.  I cant remember how to spell google.    I did read that page at your request (before you edited).  Seems the long at short of it is: to use subsonic when you want to make things dead at close distance with little noise.  See I aint dumb just a little slow.  What do you expect from us Louisiana boys, we dont even have shoes.

cmon guys, I bet you all didn't fall out of your mamma knowing that if you want it as quiet as possible it has to be subsonic.  It's basic but yet it's not something you see everyday at the range.  Give him a break.

You and I both know the shoes thing is not the case.  Unfortunately, the rest of the country thinks we all live in houses on poles in the swamp.  I got the information I was looking for, and if some elitist members need to belittle me along the way, then so be it.  It is part of this site unfortunately, and I cant say I havent done it too.   I dont get my feelings hurt, and neither should anyone else.

No, but the point is that it's rude to go asking people to spend their time reading & answering your question when google gives much more information than we could type.  I don't ask questions here until I've exhausted google and the site search.

I appreciate any and all information people seem fit to give, but no one MAKES YOU read and/or reply to posts, so how can it be rude.  Free country, remember.
