Does anyone have experience shooting 5.56 subsonic in an AR? Here are some questions: What grain bullet is it? Do you know the powder type, charge, and pressure? Have you tried to re-load this round for same application? What is usable range? |
I have tried several of the subsonic loads that are commercially available. EBR ammo is okay but did not provide the results I was looking for on accuracy. I have also tried the Extreme Shock ammo that is subsonic and will cycle the action of the M16. The bullet tumbled at about 35 yds and was indeed subsonic. The weight of the bullet is 124gr. This ammo is too expensive at about $4 per round. In my search for published data on subsonic .223, I found that Accurate Smokeless Powders -- Volume 2, on page 187 lists three loads for subsonic. I have loaded two of these and they work great. The forumla is as follows: Case: Rem Primer: Rem 7 1/2 Powder: Solo 1250 First Load: Bullet is IMI 55 gr FMJ 3.5 grains of powder, Vel 1139fps, CUP of 13,500 Second Load: Bullet is HDY 60 gr SP 4.2 grains of powder, Vel 1111, CUP of 19,100 Third Load: Bullet is HDY 75gr HPBT 4.5 grains of powder, Vel 1052, CUP of 22,100 I loaded both the 60 grain and 75 grain. In my M16A1 with 11.5" barrell, the 60 grain was the most accurate. At 100 yards, I had to hold +8 MOA. This by far is the most accurate and cheaper than I have found. |
You're wondering if a round that's designed to perform at Mach 3 will be effective at subsonic speeds? I can't tell if you're wondering if it's useful in anti-personnel roles or if you're just wondering what it's max "accurate" range is. |
Both. At what range will it no longer sustain a 1" group and at what range will it not penetrate effectively. |
