I am a LEO and currently we are issued Winchester Ranger 55 gr. pointed soft tip .223. Im not really an ammo guy and Im trying to learn.

#1- any comments on this type of round?
#2- can anyone suggest an "oh crap!" round to have handy just in case I come up against someone with significant cover i.e. vehicle, truck, etc?

Id appreciate any help I can get on this.

Dont know about LE but the Sierra 55grn spitzer is what I shoot in my .223 and .22-250 for everything from Ground Squirrells (sp) to Mule Deer on occasion.  I like having a bullet that can cover most everthing that I would shoot with these two calibers.  Expansion without fragmentation and enough weight to provide shock.

Green Tips.  I tried out some of the S&B greentipped SS109 ammo and at 75yds it penetrated 5/16 inch thick angle iron like butter. Fired out a 11.5 inch barrel with the 5 inch flash supressor.

With todays sheet metal on vehicles I doubt it would have any problem going in and out the otherside.

The best performing rounds (meaning wound performance) after passing through barriers like auto glass and sheet steel are the Federal Tactical (NOT the TRU) loads, loaded with Trophy Bonded Bear Claw (TBBC) bullets.  If you've got a 1:9 or faster twist barrel, you want the 62gr load, otherwise use the 55gr version.  Fed Tac are LEO-only rounds and aren't easy to get for normal folks, but nothing touches them for barrier work.  M855 isn't even close, especially in auto glass.

Remember: it's not enough JUST to penetrate the barrier; the bullet must still create a large wound on the other side.
