Trying to find out what size, cal., etc. of bullets to use for the .300 Whisper upper I just got - specifically looking for sub-sonic loads (220-240 grain bullets).

What diameter bullets do I need to use?

OK, first things first.  It's a 30 caliber weapon, so you use 30 caliber bullets (same as the 30-06 and 308).  Search online for 300 Whisper, 30/221, etc.  There are a lot of great web pages out there with real world load data.  Quarterbore, AR15 barrels.com,  and Fiesty Rooster are all good resources with links back and forth to get you started.

Sierra and the AA load book both have super and sub sonic load data.  Get the Sierra manual, it's a reloaders must have, no matter what or how much/little you reload.  Look at it as a Safety device if you don't have it or don't want to justify the cost.

Make brass from expanding 221 fireball or necking down 223 Rem, which is the prefered method for reliability, cost, quality, and availability.  Fireball brass is too $$ and splits and ovals too many necks.

What twist rate do you have in your barrel?  Usually a 1/8 is used, which will stabilize up to the 240gn bullets subsonic.  The often seen 1/10 twist will usually only RELIABILY stabilize the 168-175gn bullets subsonic.  The rules change slightly for supersonic loads and temperature variables.  Don't expect much past 300 yds subsonic.  Usually you can get at least MOA out of good loads in an AR platform.  Lots of fun.  YMMV.

Next question, what size is your gas port?  It's OK if you don't know, but the reason that I ask is that there is a lot less gas and under a lot less pressure with subsonic loads than there is with supersonic loads.  BONUS to you if you have an adjustable gas tube, as you will be able to use both type loads with only minor adjustments.  Usually a weapon that is tuned for sub won't work too well for super, and vice versa, hence the adjustable gas tube.

Do you reload?  You're gonna have to if you're going to get anything out of this upper, but once you get it set up and running, it's simply awesome.  I have one with an AWC can on it, and it makes more noise cycling the action than the report.  My Remmy 700 you can only hear the firing pin strike and the action tightening up!  Way cool shit!
