| The product reviews section on this website introduced me to the M855 compatible ammunition that IMI has. IMI's website refers to it as the silver bullet or special bullet. Since the box is marked "compatible" does this mean that its meant to recreate the ballistic performance of a regular M855 round? Does anyone have any experience with this compatible round? Where can I get this compatible round because I believe Cole Distributing went out of business? Inquiring minds want to know. |

It's designed to give steel penetration similar to standard SS-109 bullets, but without using a separate steel penetrator in the nose to do it. The trade-off is that the alloy used for the bullet core is much more expensive than the steel/lead combo, but that it should be somewhat more accurate due to the one-piece core. It's a poor performer when it comes to fragmentation, and it's relatively expensive and hard to find, so I don't really see the attraction to it, unless you're looking to pierce steel helmets or car doors at 600m, and can't or won't use standard SS-109 bullets. -Troy |

No info on use, but frrom a THREAD on the IMI Small Arms Ammunition Forum: Where can I order IMI 5.56 Grey Tip 62 grn M855S "special bullet"? I used it before in my AR carbine, and it's very accurate! But now I cannot find it. Botach Tactical is flat-out terrible to deal with (tried them many times- wrong stuff sent, charged for stuff not sent, no response to calls or e-mails, orders ignored/never filled...), and Widener's Reloading only has the green tip. I would really like that grey-tip M855S, but I need someone I can get it from. Any ideas?... The IMI Moderator, apparently taking his cues for customer service from Botach, responds 10 months later, but not necessarily responding to the question: IMI will be supplying WINCHESTER AMMUNITION with some 223 REM 62 Gr FMJ ammunition. The OLIN catalogue symbol is USA223R3. These cartridges won't have a grey-tip. We expect them to reach OLIN by the end of this year. [2004] |
