This is primarily directed at Tatjana, Brouhaha, and Troy as they will be doing all the heavy work in taking this data to the next application level.

We absolutely, positively have to develop our own BC's if we're ever going to use Maverickmcii's table for our unified field theory of 5.56 fragmentation range. The current published stuff is total chaos. To wit: Sierra 69 MK: .305, Hornady 68 OTM .358, 77 SMK .362, Horny 75 .395, Nosler 77 OTM .340, Nosler 69 OTM .359 (WTF?). A cursory perusal of these published claims will tell you that the manufacturer's published BC's cannot possibly be established on any consistent norm. So, we'll just get a consistent set for ourselves, at least over the relevant ranges.

I already put forth the 69 SMK results so, that's a start. I've got the 68 Horny's shooting pretty well in my gun (2,950 fps, 0.55" @ 100 yards). (Side note: In my gun, the 68 Horny's with cannelure shoot radically better than the non-cannelured commercial version. Go figure.) I've got the Nosler 77 OTM's in the kinda-OK range: 2,750 fps, 1.5" @ 100 yards.

I haven't worked up anything for the 77 SMK yet as, for some inexplicable reason, Sierra won't sell this bullet in quantities of less than 500. If anybody thinks I'm going to buy 500 godam bullets just to see if they'll work in my gun or not can just kiss my rosy red ass and take suck out of ......   Sorry.... Got a little carried away there. In any event, KY23 (bless his little heart) has offered to spot me a few 77 SMK's. So those will be developed at a later date. For this week, it'll be just the 68 Hornady's and the Nosler 77's.

I plan on setting the 3-window Oehler @ 10 ft. and the PACT @ 200 yards. I don't see a sound reason to measure @ 100 as we are already quite confident that is well within the frag range of the rounds to be tested. If ya'll see potential value in going to 250 yards, I may give it a try. I don't have a problem risking my chrono to the 0.6 MOA Hornady 68's but, unless the wind is dead still, I get a little nervous for the welfare of my screens @ 250 yards with the 1.5 MOA 77 Noslers. Especially since the weenies at the bench rest range get their panties all in a bunch if I want to take a shot of Jack Daniels to steady myself down a little.

Your comments/suggestions in advance are welcome. Any suggestions made after the fact, prefaced by "You should have...": please feel free to shove, individually or collectively, up your ass. I'm not doing this twice. I'm old. I'm tired. I'm grouchy. And the temperature out here in the desert is now up  egg-on-a-sidewalk X1.374.

Good luck not hitting your chrono!

I'm not that brave

Where and when will this research take place?  Who's auditing your work?  Do you need any assitance? (unless it's at a range, I don't do ranges)  I need to finish some research of my own.

But if you're one of those New River loners, that's cool too!

Where and when will this research take place?

I usually use the bench rest range @ BA. There's one day a week when the place is pretty well confined to myself and a few of the guys from Robar and McMillan Bros. Rifle Co. It's an altogether pleasent arrangement.

I'm sort of an honorary New River looney. I live in Cave Creek which, prior to all the yuppie geeks moving in, pretty much marched to its own drumbeat. They tell me that's progress.

That's cool!  I can't deal with those range Assholes anyway.  I'm used to shooting on hot ranges, so they're always yelling at me for this, that, and the other Damned thing.
